Its campaign, replayable co-op Operations, and competitive Eternal War give it several ways to engage with the setting. Push Square praised the campaign’s cinematic set pieces and called the game a cooperative classic, while noting its review team had not tested competitive multiplayer. The available evidence supports a strong account of the game’s structure and premise, but not claims about PS5 frame rate, resolution, or technical stability.
What is Space Marine 2 about?
You play Lieutenant Demetrian Titus, an Ultramarine returning to the chapter more than a century after the first Space Marine. A Tyranid invasion threatens Kadaku, a jungle world, and Avarax, a sprawling metropolis. The premise places Titus in the middle of a large-scale war, with the campaign following the fight against the alien swarm.
The setting is part of the appeal even if you are new to Warhammer 40,000: the Ultramarines are the viewpoint faction, the Tyranids are the invading enemy, and the conflict supplies the scale and military atmosphere. Warhammer Community’s overview describes the campaign’s story and its relationship to the separate Operations missions. Warhammer Community’s campaign and mode overview
How does the combat work?
The basic combat vocabulary moves between close-quarters chainsword attacks and heavy ranged weapons. That contrast is central to the game’s action: encounters ask you to face enemies at close range as well as attack with firearms. Focus Entertainment’s launch description establishes that mix, but it is not an independent assessment of responsiveness, balance, or polish on PS5. Focus Entertainment’s launch announcement

For a critical view of how the action and set pieces come together, Push Square’s PS5 review praises the campaign’s cinematic presentation and large-scale moments. That is the reviewer’s judgment; the available material does not document hands-on measurements of PS5 performance.
What modes are in Space Marine 2?
| Mode | Focus | Players and replay |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Titus’s narrative fight against the Tyranids | Playable solo or in co-op with up to two friends |
| Operations | Replayable PvE missions that run alongside events in the campaign | Separate missions for up to three players; seven classes are listed on the PlayStation Store |
| Eternal War | Competitive PvP | 6v6 |
PlayStation and Warhammer Community describe the campaign as supporting three-player co-op, while Operations are distinct missions rather than simply the campaign played again. Push Square found Operations engaging and closely tied to events unfolding in parallel with the story. Its review-period coverage did not test competitive multiplayer, so it cannot establish how Eternal War performs or feels in extended play.

Can you play the campaign co-op?
Yes. The campaign can be played solo or with up to two friends, for a total of three players. Warhammer Community describes the campaign as supporting drop-in/drop-out co-op, so it is not limited to a separate multiplayer storyline. Online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus according to the PS5 store listing.
Is Space Marine 2 single player?
Yes. The campaign supports solo play, as well as co-op. The PlayStation listing identifies difficulty adjustment as a preset option. The available sources do not establish how companion behavior or encounter balance differs between solo and co-op, so those details should not be assumed from the player-count options alone.

Is the campaign or Operations a better fit?
Choose the campaign for the story
The campaign is the narrative route through Titus’s return and the invasion. Push Square’s review specifically praised its cinematic campaign and set pieces. It can be played alone or with friends, so co-op is an option rather than a prerequisite for following the story.
Choose Operations for repeatable co-op
Operations provide separate PvE missions for up to three players and continue the fighting alongside the campaign’s events. Push Square’s review-period assessment was positive, calling them engaging and closely woven into the broader conflict. Their replayable structure makes them the clearest mode for returning to co-op combat outside the campaign.

- Destroy the tyranid swarms. Defend humanity.
- Eliminate merciless tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign
- Experience thrilling, bloody and fast-paced third-person action with hundreds of opponents on screen
- Defend the Empire as a Space Marine in brutal and always replayable PvE missions for up to 3 players
Try Eternal War for competitive matches
Eternal War is the 6v6 competitive mode. The sources establish its format, but the cited PS5 review did not sample it; there is not enough evidence here to make a quality verdict about its balance, matchmaking, or long-term appeal.

- Ideal support for play and imagination
Patch 15 adds a Chaos Siege variant, where players can use Chaos Space Marines in PvE; a Crucible challenge system with penalties and rewards; new weapons and armor; and the first Season Pass 3 cosmetic DLC. This means the current game includes more than its launch campaign and modes, though the announcement alone does not establish how much value any individual player will get from those additions.
