Its best idea is making grinding, wall-running, vaulting and aerial attacks part of one continuous combat loop. Its humor is deliberately juvenile, and its platform features differ, so check the edition you plan to play.
What makes Sunset Overdrive different?
Set in a post-apocalyptic Sunset City in 2027, the game follows a contaminated energy drink that turns much of the population into toxic mutants. You fight mutants, robots and human enemies, but the defining challenge is not simply clearing an area: it is keeping your momentum while you do it.

Rails and cables invite you to grind, walls let you run vertically, and rooftops and other surfaces become launch points for vaults and jumps. Dodges, swings, flips, trampoline bounces and ground pounds extend the flow between traversal and attacks. The Xbox product description sums up the design as making the open world a “tactical playground” through grinding, vaulting and wall-running. Xbox product listing
That emphasis is what separates the game from a conventional cover-based shooter: staying in motion is central to both navigation and combat. TIME reviewer Matt Peckham praised the fluidity of chaining movement and attacks in his 2014 Xbox One review, writing, “And boy does this thing flow.” That is one critic’s judgment of the experience, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy its pace.
#1 Best Overall
- An Open World with No Rules: Leap off buildings, run along walls, and grind power lines and rails to destroy your foes from every angle.
- Lethal Weapons: Collect and upgrade an arsenal of unconventional weapons that use items like dynamite, fireworks, harpoons, and acid to destroy your enemies.
- Mayhem with Friends: Seamlessly transition from campaign to Chaos Squad, an 8-player cooperative experience.
How do weapons and abilities support the movement?
The arsenal is intentionally unconventional, and the game’s configurable power-ups let players shape how their attacks work. The result is a loop in which traversal is not a break between firefights: movement helps keep combat active, while weapon and ability choices give you ways to vary how you handle enemies. Players looking for grounded firearms, restrained presentation or a slower tactical pace may find the silliness and speed less appealing.
What are the main drawbacks?
The humor and content are not for everyone
Sunset Overdrive leans into colorful, irreverent and deliberately silly humor. Its official Xbox and Steam listings identify mature-rated content. That tone is part of the game’s identity, but it can be a poor fit if you prefer a serious story or more restrained jokes. Steam listing

One 2014 review reported technical problems
In his October 27, 2014 review of the Xbox One version, TIME’s Matt Peckham described missions that would not advance without a reset, enemies that stopped damaging him, places where he became stuck in geometry, and two crashes. These are problems reported in one reviewer’s 2014 Xbox One session; they do not establish that the same faults affect every platform or current version. TIME review by Matt Peckham

Xbox and PC versions: what changes?
| Platform | Store-listed platforms and modes | Edition and included content |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | The current Xbox listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It lists online co-op and multiplayer for 2–8 players. | The listing offers the base game and a Deluxe Edition, with season pass and add-ons also listed separately. Price, subscription inclusion and cloud access can vary by region and plan. |
| PC (Steam) | Steam lists single-player features. The PC release date is November 16, 2018. | The package includes the single-player campaign, the Mystery of the Mooil Rig and Dawn of the Rise of the Fallen Machines expansions, and a Weapons Pack. |
These storefront listings do not establish feature parity between editions. In particular, do not assume that the Xbox listing’s online multiplayer capabilities are available in the Steam version; Steam describes its version as single-player. Check the listing for the platform and edition you intend to buy. Xbox listing · Steam listing

Quick Recap
Who should play Sunset Overdrive?
- Try it if you enjoy open-world action, expressive traversal and combat that rewards chaining movement with attacks.
- Think twice if you dislike juvenile humor, mature-rated content or a deliberately over-the-top tone.
- Choose carefully if you want multiplayer: the Xbox listing describes online co-op and multiplayer, while Steam lists single-player. Confirm the exact platform and edition first.
- On PC, compare your hardware with Steam’s requirements and account for the client’s separate Windows policy.
