Support gems modify compatible skill gems; they do not usually grant an active skill on their own. How you connect them—and how many copies you can use—depends on whether you are playing Path of Exile (PoE 1) or Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2), so check the rules for your game version before following a build guide.
What support gems do
A support gem changes a compatible skill gem when the game recognizes them as connected. Depending on the support, that change can affect damage, a skill’s behavior, or its costs. A support is not a replacement for the skill gem that gives you an active ability.
In PoE 1-style linked sockets, the support must be placed in a socket linked to the skill gem. The PoE Wiki’s support gem reference describes this socket requirement and notes that tags alone do not establish compatibility. Check the applicable game’s socket rules rather than assuming PoE 1’s linking language applies unchanged to PoE 2.
How to tell whether a support works with a skill
- Check the in-game compatibility display. Use the game’s indication of whether that support can affect the chosen skill; this is more reliable than inferring compatibility from a shared tag.
- Read restrictions on both gems. Tags help describe a skill, but a support’s explicit restrictions can still rule it out. The PoE Wiki also cautions against treating tags alone as proof of supportability.
- Confirm the connection. In PoE 1, the support needs a linked socket. For PoE 2, follow that version’s current socket and support rules.
- Check the result and costs. Compare the skill’s displayed effect and any cost or reservation consequences after adding the support. Supports can have cost multipliers, and the exact impact depends on the gem and version.
How many support gems should you use?
Grinding Gear Games’ beginner guide to Path of Exile describes a typical build as revolving around one or two main skills, with up to five support gems supporting a chosen skill. Treat that as a general guide description, not a universal cap or a rule that applies identically to every setup and version.

For a specific build, the useful question is not simply how many supports fit: it is which compatible supports advance that skill’s job without imposing costs or trade-offs the build cannot afford. Compare a candidate support’s actual effect, compatibility, cost or reservation consequences, and the character’s goal.
What changed in Path of Exile 2
PoE 2’s Early Access content update 0.3.0 changed support-gem rules. Grinding Gear Games said in its official 0.3.0 patch notes: “We’ve removed the restriction of having one of each support gem per character. You can use as many copies as you like.” The same notes say many supports gained multiple tiers, with different values, extra stats, or changed behavior at lower tiers.

GGG said the design aim was to avoid builds using the same five strongest supports on every skill while encouraging ability combinations. That statement is specific to the 0.3.0 PoE 2 changes; it is not a general rule for PoE 1. Do not carry an older PoE 2 guide’s assumptions about duplicate supports or support tiers forward without checking the patch it covers.

- Compatibility: Make sure the game indicates the support applies to the skill.
- Effect: Decide whether its damage, behavior, or utility suits what the skill needs to do.
- Costs: Account for any resource-cost or reservation consequences rather than comparing effects in isolation.
- Version and tier: Check which tier and values are available in your game version.
- Build purpose: Choose for the skill’s role and the build’s goal, not just a support’s reputation in another setup.
Exact numerical comparisons depend on the chosen skill, support, and game version. For PoE 1, the third-party PoE Gems database reports its data was updated on 2026-07-23 for the Allflame (3.29.0) league; treat it as version-specific and potentially out of date after that date. For either game, use current in-game gem text and the latest official patch notes when confirming values or availability.
