What does PvPvE mean in this game?
PvPvE means that both player-versus-player (PvP) and player-versus-environment (PvE) play are involved: players face other players as well as enemies controlled by the game. Miyazaki described the game as “an online multiplayer focused game, with both player vs player and player vs enemy gameplay” in Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice interview, published April 4, 2025. Is The Duskbloods an extraction game?
That has not been established, and the PvPvE label alone is not enough to conclude that it is. In an interview published August 20, 2026, Miyazaki explained: “I used the term simply to describe the fact that the game contains both PvP and PvE.” He added that the term might make players imagine a more specific format, such as an extraction shooter, which was not what he meant by using it.
Coverage of that interview by AUTOMATON WEST describes matches unfolding in four phases. Players earn “Virtues”—the article’s unofficial translation—as victory points; players below the required points at a phase’s end are eliminated. The last three players then resolve the match in either a PvP duel or a team PvE fight against a powerful enemy. What is the premise and setting?
Miyazaki calls the playable characters the “Bloodsworn”: people who gained superhuman abilities through special blood. They compete for “First Blood” as humanity nears an event called the “Twilight of Humanity.” The game does not take place in one fixed era or location; its maps span different times and places, including Gothic- and Victorian-inspired settings.
In Nintendo’s interview, Miyazaki said Switch 2 hardware gave the team room to emphasize online play and remain closer to its original vision. He described intended elements including free-form combat, dramatic action, character customization and fragmentary storytelling. These are the director’s descriptions of design aims, not independent confirmation of how the finished game will play.
