No evidence yet shows that Nintendo has solved stick drift on Switch 2. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 sticks are larger, smoother and more durable, but they are not Hall Effect sticks, and a teardown found what appeared to be the same basic potentiometer approach used in conventional joysticks. That means the design has changed, but a drift cure and long-term reliability have not been established.
Did Nintendo fix Joy-Con drift on Switch 2?
Not on the evidence available. Nintendo describes Joy-Con 2 sticks as larger, smoother and more durable than the original Joy-Con sticks. That is a design claim, not a published durability test or failure-rate comparison. Nintendo’s pre-release developer interview quotes Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto saying the controllers were redesigned from scratch and that the sticks have those qualities.

There is not yet a reliable, comparable figure for how often Joy-Con 2 sticks drift or how long they last. Early user reports can show that an issue has occurred, but they cannot establish how common it is across all controllers. Nor can teardown observations establish a population failure rate.
Are the Joy-Con 2 sticks Hall Effect?
No. Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Product Development & Publishing Nate Bihldorff told Nintendo Life that Joy-Con 2 sticks are “not Hall Effect sticks.” That is a direct statement about the sensing technology, not a claim that the sticks will or will not drift.

In a June 6, 2025 teardown, iFixit said the Joy-Con 2 sticks appeared to use potentiometer-based technology and that it saw no visible Hall Effect or TMR sensors. A potentiometer measures movement as a wiper moves across resistive material; contact wear or contamination can contribute to inaccurate readings. Hall Effect and TMR designs use different sensing approaches, but the teardown does not establish that either alternative would guarantee a drift-free controller.
iFixit’s inspection is a teardown observation, not a long-term reliability study. It also does not establish whether a particular material or component change has affected Joy-Con 2 wear. The careful conclusion is that Nintendo redesigned the controller, while the available evidence does not demonstrate that it removed the underlying type of sensing associated with wear.

What does the “unlikely Nintendo product” connection mean?
Nintendo’s developer interview describes the Switch 2’s magnetic controller attachment as a return to an idea explored during development of the original Switch. That is an unusual design-history detail, but it is not evidence that another Nintendo product solved stick drift or that the attachment mechanism prevents it. The connection to drift remains the Joy-Con 2 stick design and the evidence about its sensing technology.
What should I do if a Joy-Con 2 stick responds incorrectly?
Nintendo Support recommends troubleshooting before seeking service. Its guidance covers sticks that do not respond or respond incorrectly, as well as sticks that are stuck or difficult to move. Follow the current instructions for your region:

Check whether inputs have been remapped and whether the problem happens in a particular game or application; either can make an apparent stick fault look different from a hardware issue. If the support steps do not resolve it, use Nintendo’s repair route for your region. Service terms and eligibility vary by region, so check the applicable local support page.
Can you repair or replace a drifting Joy-Con 2 stick?
iFixit’s teardown notes that the joystick is a high-wear part and that access matters for repairability. The team removed the stick only after opening the controller and manipulating the thumbgrip and housing, and cautioned that it could not promise the process would avoid damaging the joystick. That early teardown is not a recommended repair procedure.

- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Do not assume that calibration, cleaning, or a replacement module will fix every instance. The available evidence does not establish a universal repair method, current repair eligibility in every region, or that any particular third-party joystick module is compatible with Switch 2. Before buying a replacement or attempting disassembly, verify the exact model compatibility and consider Nintendo’s regional service option.

A stronger answer would require comparable long-term data on Joy-Con 2 failures, ideally with a clear sample, period of use and method for confirming drift. Nintendo’s durability description and iFixit’s hardware inspection answer different questions: the first describes intended design, while the second reports what was visible in one teardown. Neither supplies a measured lifespan or failure rate.
Best Value
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Until such evidence exists, the most defensible assessment is that Joy-Con 2 is redesigned but has not been shown to eliminate drift. Owners should use Nintendo’s troubleshooting and regional repair guidance if a stick begins behaving incorrectly.
