What reviewers praise—and the main caveat
Music-led rhythm play and visual style
The positive comments point to a game built around its soundtrack and presentation. GamingTrend praised the aesthetics and soundtrack, while Push Square described the result as a unique rhythm title. This fits the game’s core loop: strike notes with tracked hands, follow rails, and move to avoid obstacles. PlayStation describes multiple difficulty levels alongside its VR dance-and-fitness framing.

Experience levels add spectacle, but often cost extra
GameSpew singled out the Experience levels as especially immersive, but warned that most are sold as DLC. That distinction matters if the main attraction is elaborate music-synchronized presentation: a favorable review of the game does not mean every Experience is included with the base purchase. Check the edition and regional storefront listing for the specific content included.
Is Synth Riders worth considering?
The 2023 PS5 reviews make a strong case for considering it if you want a music-focused VR rhythm game, value a vivid audiovisual style, and are interested in movement as part of play. The scores alone cannot tell you whether its movement style or music selection suits you personally. If particular Experience levels are a deciding factor, verify whether they are included or sold separately before buying.

There is also a separate, much larger but different kind of signal on Steam: its listing snapshot showed 92% positive user reviews from 1,335 reviews when accessed in 2026. That is changing Steam user sentiment, not a professional critic score, and it should not be combined with the three PS5 critic reviews. Steam’s listing is the source for that user-review snapshot.
Which edition and platform should you check?
Store editions bundle different music and Experience content, and hardware requirements vary by platform. PlayStation’s US listing describes these editions as follows; content and prices can vary by region and change over time.

PlayStation’s US product page lists the editions and content, while its VR requirements information specifies the equipment. Add-ons are also listed separately. Compare what is included with what you actually want to play; an edition name by itself does not establish that every add-on is bundled.
On Steam, the game is presented as a VR rhythm title with custom-song support and multiplayer. The supplied platform information does not establish feature parity with PlayStation, so do not assume the same edition contents or capabilities across storefronts.

Do you need a VR headset?
Yes. Synth Riders is a VR game, and the required setup depends on where you play. For PS5, PlayStation specifies PS VR2 and PS VR2 Sense controllers; for PS4, it specifies PS VR, a PS Camera, and a PS Move motion controller. Steam’s listing also describes the game as VR. PlayStation cautions that VR games may cause motion sickness for some players.
