If Tetris Forever keeps crashing or closes back to the Steam menu, start by updating SteamOS and restarting your Deck. If that does not help, temporarily disable third-party apps, then try the latest Proton compatibility tool for the game. Steam currently lists Tetris Forever as Steam Deck Verified, but that rating is not a guarantee that every installation will be crash-free.
Why might Tetris Forever crash on Steam Deck?
Steam’s store listing identifies Tetris Forever as a Digital Eclipse game released on November 12, 2024, and currently labels it Steam Deck Verified. Valve describes Verified games as working well on Deck out of the box, but compatibility ratings are assessments rather than promises that an individual copy will never crash. Valve also notes that game compatibility and Deck features can change over time, so ratings are subject to ongoing review (Valve’s Deck Verified program).
The official Steam guidance reviewed does not identify a confirmed Tetris Forever-specific crash cause or a Proton version known to fix this game. The steps below follow Steam Support’s general troubleshooting advice for Steam Deck software and game compatibility.
Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart from the update screen, or choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Launch Tetris Forever again and check whether it stays open.
Steam recommends installing available system updates and restarting when troubleshooting system instability. This is the least disruptive first step and does not change the game’s compatibility settings. See the Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Temporarily disable third-party apps
If the game still crashes, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and try Tetris Forever again. This is a way to isolate whether another app is involved; a crash stopping after this step would not, by itself, prove which app caused it.
Try the latest Proton compatibility tool
If Tetris Forever alone is unstable, test Steam’s compatibility setting for the game. Record the original setting first so you can restore it if the change makes things worse.

- Open Library and select Tetris Forever.
- Open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version offered, then launch the game and check whether the crash continues.
Steam Support recommends this compatibility-tool step when needed for a Steam app. Steam notes that forcing Proton may cause the Windows version of a game to download if only its Linux version is installed. The guidance does not establish that any particular Proton release is a known fix for Tetris Forever.

- Only Tetris Forever closes: describe it to Steam Support as an issue affecting one game, and include the steps you tried.
- The Deck becomes unstable across apps: report that broader pattern. Steam’s troubleshooting guide treats system instability separately from instability in a Steam application.
If the problem persists after updating and restarting, Steam also suggests opting into the Steam Deck Beta as a possible way to receive a relevant change, checking SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions, or contacting Steam Support. Beta is an optional troubleshooting avenue, not a guaranteed fix. The guide applies to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models and says titles tested through Deck Verified maintain their ratings for both.
