The long-awaited release is a collection of 50 complete games—not a set of throwaway minigames—framed as a catalog from a fictional 1980s developer.
When did UFO 50 release?
Mossmouth announced September 18, 2024, as the Steam release date. That date has passed: the studio’s current site says UFO 50 is out now on Steam and Switch. The announcement was made at Summer Game Fest 2024, not in 2026. Steam’s product listing identifies Mossmouth as the game’s developer and publisher, while Mossmouth’s site confirms its current platform availability.

What is UFO 50?
UFO 50 brings together 50 games spanning genres such as platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzles, roguelites, and RPGs. Mossmouth describes them as complete experiences rather than minigames. The games are presented as releases from UFO Soft, a fictional studio for a fictional 1980s console, with characters and references connecting the collection into a shared alternate-universe catalog. The Steam listing describes both single-player and multiplayer play, with local co-op or versus modes in half of the collection.
Why did the release take so long?
Derek Yu and Jon Perry began developing the project in 2016, initially exploring smaller prototypes before building toward a collection of 50 games. In 2020, Yu and composer Eirik Suhrke stepped away to work on Spelunky 2; the team later returned to complete UFO 50. The project’s history and announcement are outlined on the official UFO 50 site.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
In a February 23, 2024 developer update, Yu said the team expected to have a complete game within a few months but was targeting the second half of the year to allow more time for testing and marketing. He added that polishing and cleaning up older code had taken up more of the remaining work than he had anticipated. The September date followed that additional development time.
Is UFO 50 one game or 50 separate games?
It is a single collection containing 50 distinct, complete games, presented as a fictional back catalog. Their scope varies: some are shorter, while others are designed to support much longer play. In an August 2024 interview with The Guardian, Yu estimated that Grimstone, one of the games in the collection, could take 20 hours to play through. That is his estimate for that individual game, not a measured completion time or a playtime figure for the entire collection. The Guardian interview also quoted Yu describing the ambition behind the project: “Every game could exist as a full release on some 80s console or computer.”
