How Steam Awards voting worked
Valve’s 2024 Steam Awards had 11 categories. Finalists were selected through community nominations, then Steam users voted during the Winter Sale. Any non-limited Steam account could vote once in each category, and voters could change their choices before voting closed. Valve says each winning game received a physical trophy shipped to its developer’s office and a virtual trophy displayed on its Steam store page. Valve’s 2024 Steam Awards page describes the rules and award mechanics.
What the categories recognize
The awards cover different kinds of games and player experiences rather than one shared measure of quality. Some categories focus on platform or play context, such as VR Game of the Year, Best Game on Steam Deck, Better with Friends, and Sit Back and Relax. Others highlight a specific quality or appeal: visual style, innovation, difficulty, soundtrack, story, or continued developer support.
