For players who want to spend time inside Pandora rather than only watch it, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora can make a persuasive case that the game is the better Avatar experience. That is the deliberately provocative view of WIRED writer Boone Ashworth—not an objective verdict or a consensus—and it depends on valuing exploration and agency over a tightly authored story.
What the claim means—and what it doesn’t
Ashworth’s December 19, 2025 WIRED article argues that the game offers something the films cannot: extended, player-directed time in Pandora. The comparison is about access to the setting, not a claim that the game is superior in every part of the franchise.

The films tell stories centered on family and love. Frontiers of Pandora instead puts players in control of a custom Na’vi protagonist in the Western Frontier. Its appeal is the freedom to linger, roam, and choose what to do next rather than follow a director’s sequence of scenes. Ashworth’s verdict is aesthetic and personal; there is no objective test establishing a winner.
Why the game can feel more like visiting Pandora
Exploration replaces a fixed runtime
The game lets players set their own pace through Pandora’s lush environments. They can explore, hunt, and stop to take in the flora instead of moving through a fixed film narrative. For someone whose main draw is the world itself, that freedom can make the setting feel less like a backdrop and more like a place to inhabit.

Actions connect the world to its conflict
Combat is part of the experience: players can fight RDA encampments and see foliage return as they restore damaged areas. That loop connects exploration and action to the franchise’s ecological conflict. It is not simply a passive tour, though players who want only story-driven action may find the roaming less compelling.
A custom protagonist gives the player room to make the experience personal
The player’s Na’vi is custom-created, so the perspective is not identical to following a film’s established leads. As lead game designer Amandine Lauer put it in WIRED’s account, “We try to make sure that everyone gets to tell their own story.” That is a design aim, not a promise that every player will find the plot or cast memorable.
Where the movies still have the advantage
Ashworth’s argument has clear limits. The game’s plot can feel dense, its characters forgettable, and its scope potentially bloated. If what you want from Avatar is a concentrated story about relationships, the films may be the stronger fit. The game’s added freedom also means more time spent deciding where to go and what to do; that is a benefit for explorers, but not necessarily for viewers seeking a concise narrative.
The comparison is qualitative. WIRED characterized the game’s launch reviews as middling and later interest as a sleeper hit, but the article supplied no review aggregate, sales figure, or player-count data that would settle the question. The case for the game rests on the experience Ashworth describes, not a measurable quality ranking.
What changed after WIRED’s article
Ubisoft released a free update on December 5, 2025, adding third-person mode and New Game+. Players can switch between first- and third-person perspectives. The option broadens how players can view the world, but it does not change the central distinction Ashworth identifies: the game gives players control over how they spend time in Pandora. Ubisoft announced on February 17, 2026, that the game became available with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Availability can depend on region and subscription, so check the current listing for your market. Ubisoft’s Game Pass announcement.
Should you play it instead of watching?
Choose Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora if you want to explore, hunt, fight, and spend unhurried time in the setting. Choose the films if you want a directed story about characters and relationships without the open-ended pace of a game. You do not have to treat one as a replacement for the other: the game’s strongest claim is that it offers a different, more participatory way to experience Pandora.
Ubisoft lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox versions, though store availability and editions can vary by region. Its From the Ashes expansion is separate content or included in certain editions with the base game; it follows So’lek and connects to Avatar: Fire and Ash. Before buying, check whether a listing includes the base game, whether the expansion requires it, and which platform and edition it covers. Ubisoft Store product information.
