This is an editorial shortlist—not an official ranking—chosen for quality and lasting appeal, genre variety, and how closely each game fits the term “exclusive.” The strictest picks were released for Xbox One without a PC version in the cited Xbox announcements; games labeled “Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive” are identified separately because they were also available on PC.
What counts as an Xbox One exclusive?
Xbox used more than one exclusivity label. “Xbox One exclusive” is the closer fit for a console-only list. “Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive” means the game was available across the Xbox and Windows ecosystem, not only on Xbox One hardware. “First on Xbox One” described a release arriving on Xbox first and does not, by itself, promise permanent exclusivity. Xbox’s 2016 announcement distinguished these categories; its wording is useful context, not a guarantee about a game’s current availability on other platforms. Xbox Wire’s 2016 announcement

Halo 5: Guardians — best for a Halo shooter on Xbox One
Halo 5: Guardians was listed in Xbox’s 2015 Xbox One exclusives lineup. It is the clearest fit here for readers seeking a standalone Halo shooter rather than a collection of earlier entries. Xbox Wire’s 2015 lineup announcement
Rare Replay — best for a broad game collection
Rare Replay was also part of Xbox’s 2015 Xbox One exclusives lineup. Its appeal is variety: it gathers games from across Rare’s history, making it a natural choice for players who would rather sample a collection than commit to one genre. Xbox Wire’s 2015 lineup announcement
Rank #2
- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
Xbox ecosystem exclusives: also released for Windows 10
Forza Horizon 3 — best for more open-world driving
Forza Horizon 3 is a strong racing recommendation if “exclusive” means part of the Xbox ecosystem rather than confined to the console. Xbox described it as an Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive in 2016, so it should not be presented as Xbox One-only. Xbox Wire’s 2016 announcement
Gears of War 4 — best for a third-person shooter
Gears of War 4 is another Xbox ecosystem pick: Xbox’s 2016 announcement grouped it with Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusives. That PC release matters if you are choosing specifically for a console-only collection. Xbox Wire’s 2016 announcement
Rank #3
- The all new custom character variations give you unprecedented control to customize the fighters and make them your own
- The new graphics engine showcasing every skull shattering, eye popping moment, brings you so close to the fight you can feel it
- And featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat's best in class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making
ReCore — an action-adventure alternative
ReCore appeared in the same Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusives category. Consider it for a different action-adventure option, while keeping in mind that the cited label includes PC. Xbox Wire’s 2016 announcement
Best for a longer Halo starting point
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Xbox included Halo: The Master Chief Collection in its 2014 Xbox One lineup announcement. It is the collection pick for readers who want a substantial Halo package instead of starting with Halo 5: Guardians alone. The cited announcement establishes its place in that Xbox One lineup; it does not provide a current platform-availability breakdown. Xbox Wire’s 2014 lineup announcement
Rank #4
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
What Xbox’s historical awards figure does—and doesn’t—tell you
In its June 26, 2014 announcement, Xbox Wire said the Xbox One exclusive-game lineup had received more than 60 nominations and 25 award wins “to date.” Those were figures reported at that time for the lineup, not a present-day ranking, a tally for every Xbox One game, or a measure of any one title’s quality. Xbox’s historical lineup announcements identify games and how Xbox classified them at the time; they do not establish current retailer stock, edition condition, regional compatibility, or whether any particular listing is available. If you are shopping for a physical Xbox One copy, check the exact edition and region on the listing before buying. For digital access or play on other platforms, verify current availability directly with the relevant storefront rather than relying on an old exclusivity label.
