NYT Strands puzzle #738, dated Wednesday, March 11, 2026, has the theme “Survival mode.” If you want to solve it yourself, start with the gentle clue below and reveal more only when you need it.
Start with a spoiler-light hint
Parade’s theme clue is “Needed skills.” Think of abilities and tactics that help someone survive. The puzzle’s theme is “Survival mode.”
Letter starters
If you need a nudge toward the words without seeing their full answers, Parade lists these first-two-letter clues:
- AM
- AG
- MI
- CA
- DI
- DE — for the spangram
Spangram hint
The spangram is DEFENSES, an eight-letter word. TechRadar says it touches the top edge at column one and the bottom edge at column six. Parade describes its route as mostly diagonal; neither guide provides a complete coordinate-by-coordinate path.

How Strands works
Strands is a themed word-search game: connect letters on the board to find words related to the day’s theme. Theme words fill the board without overlapping. The spangram sums up the theme and stretches between two opposite sides of the grid.
Parade and The Word Finder describe a hint mechanic: find three words that are not theme answers to earn a hint revealing letters in a theme word. The Word Finder describes the board as a six-by-eight grid.

This answer guide covers game #738, labeled Wednesday, March 11, 2026. TechRadar reports that a new puzzle appears at midnight in each time zone, so the puzzle considered “today’s” can differ by location around the release boundary. TechRadar published its guide on March 10, while Parade published its guide on March 11.
