If The Sims 3 crashes when you start it on PC, the right fix depends on where startup stops. First check EA’s system-requirements and graphics-driver guidance. If the game crashes during its loading screen, test without custom content. If the launcher shows the exact “version incompatible” error after you removed a pack, delete the specific Version.tag file EA identifies. These steps address different problems; no single fix is established for every startup crash.
First, identify where startup stops
Click Play once and note what happens next. The launcher may fail to open, the EA app may return without starting the game, the launcher may open but the game may not, an error may appear, or the game may crash during its loading screen. Those are different situations, so a fix for one should not be applied automatically to another.

When asking for help, include your Windows version, the game’s store or edition, your CPU model or generation, and whether the problem began after removing an expansion pack or adding custom content. Those details help determine which troubleshooting branch applies.
Start with EA’s baseline checks

EA also suggests lowering graphics settings for performance problems such as a game that opens but runs slowly or choppily. That advice is for performance after launch; it does not establish a fix for a launcher that will not open.
If the game crashes during loading, test without custom content
EA warns that “Custom content can cause The Sims 3 to crash when you’re loading into the game.” Its recommended test is reversible: launch without custom content, then restore items individually if the game loads.

- Exit the game and restart the launcher.
- Open Installed Content and select Run without custom content.
- Try launching the game again. If it loads, add your custom content back one item at a time until the issue returns.
- Remove the item that triggers the problem using the launcher.
This test can identify a problematic item, but it does not mean custom content is responsible for every loading crash. EA’s steps are in its The Sims 3 troubleshooting guide.
If the launcher says “version incompatible” after pack removal
Use this remedy only if the launcher displays the specific “version incompatible” error, particularly after you have uninstalled a pack. EA says a leftover file can cause that error.

- Delete the file named
Version.tag. - Restart the launcher. The game recreates the file.
EA documents these steps for that launcher error in its troubleshooting guide; deleting this file is not presented as a general startup-crash fix.

If there is no loading-screen crash or version error, the steps above may not fit your problem. Record whether the launcher opens, your Windows version and CPU generation, the game’s store or edition, and any recent pack changes. EA forum discussions mention DirectX 9 installation for some launch failures, and a separate Windows 11 discussion describes an issue specific to some Alder Lake CPUs. These are community suggestions, not universal or official fixes, and the available reports do not establish that they apply to your PC.

Do not change CPU settings based only on the fact that you use Windows 11: the reported CPU workaround is hardware-specific. Likewise, a DirectX suggestion from a forum is not a reason to download runtime files from unofficial mirrors. Match any further troubleshooting to your exact error and hardware.
