The puzzle becomes accessible through Taash’s quest progression, and the clues around the area are optional if you already know the order.
How to unlock Sharksmouth Mountain
Progress Taash’s companion quest line through Lair of the Dragon King to make Sharksmouth Mountain accessible in the Rivain Coast. Once the relevant area is open, examine the vault inscription or one of the knight clues to start The Treasure of Sharksmouth Mountain. Guides describe the quest trigger somewhat differently, so either the inscription or an area clue may lead you to it.
How to solve the four-statue puzzle
At the main puzzle, face the statues and set their shields in this order, reading from left to right:
- First statue: face forward, toward you.
- Second statue: face backward, away from you.
- Third statue: face right.
- Fourth statue: face left.
This room-relative sequence is the clearest way to solve it; compass directions can be confusing if your camera or map orientation differs.

What the riddle clues mean
The inscription describes four knights by their weapons and positions. The side clues identify which named knight goes with each role:
- Dheon carries a sword and goes to the fore.
- Ifean carries a shield and guards the rear.
- Cruach wields a hammer and approaches the leftward flank.
- Rian is the archer and fires at the rightward flank.
The inscription, reproduced in GameSpot’s guide, reads: “Four knights rode to battle. One fired unto the rightward flank, her arrows a steel rain. One lingered, their shield behind to guard all’s back. One went boldly to the fore, her sword thrust forward unto the foe. One crept upon the leftward flank, his hammer a harvest reaped.” The side clues explain the names, but you can skip them and use the statue order directly.

How to claim the treasure
Once the statues are correctly positioned, the nearby treasure-room door opens. Search all three chests; walkthroughs identify Meredith’s Legacy as the unique weapon reward.
Game8’s 2024 quest guide reports additional quest rewards of 500 XP, 400 Gold, +50 Grey Wardens strength, +100 Lords of Fortune strength, and increased bond with active companions. These are guide-reported in-game reward figures.

What Meredith’s Legacy does
GameSpot describes Meredith’s Legacy as a longsword and reports +325 necrotic damage, +400 stagger, +10% leech effectiveness, and health leech on hit. In that described configuration, healing from potions and companion abilities is disabled while the weapon is equipped. Item numbers can vary by version or configuration; do not combine GameSpot’s figures with a separate item listing’s stats as if they were one universal stat line.
