What are the story and setting like?
The “Dark Ages” in the title signals a medieval-inspired fantasy setting, not a recreation of a specific period in real-world history. The game blends dark fantasy with science fiction, moving among battlefields, ruined castles, dark forests, ancient hellscapes, and unfamiliar realms. Its medieval imagery sits within the series’ supernatural war against Hell rather than a historical simulation. Bethesda’s game page
How does the gameplay differ from DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal?
Game Director Hugo Martin described the design as combining the depth associated with Eternal’s combat loop with the simpler control scheme of DOOM (2016), using a new medieval toolkit. He characterized the intended feel as more grounded and stand-and-fight. This is the developer’s design goal, not a guarantee that every player will find the controls or combat simpler. What is the Shield-Saw?
The Shield-Saw is a central new weapon and defensive tool whose throw reacts to what it hits. Martin says it can ricochet from plasma shields into other enemies, stick into flesh to stun-lock larger demons, or shatter armor and trigger an area-of-effect blast. Those are the director’s descriptions of intended mechanics. Martin’s Shield-Saw explanation
