Spoilers for Chapter 6 and both endings. The final boss is the Great Sage’s Broken Shell, fought after the Stone Monkey. Defeat it without first completing the hidden Erlang sequence and you see the standard ending; complete Erlang’s route and defeat the final boss again to see the alternate ending, often called the true or secret ending.
Who is the final boss in Black Myth: Wukong?
The Great Sage’s Broken Shell is the final boss at the end of Chapter 6. The climax first takes you through the Stone Monkey encounter, followed by the Broken Shell. The Great Sage’s Broken Shell boss guide covers that final encounter.

How do you get the alternate or “true” ending?
Complete the hidden Erlang sequence before your next victory over the Great Sage’s Broken Shell. If you defeat the Broken Shell first, the standard ending plays. You can then continue the journey, complete Erlang’s route, and return to defeat the final boss again; a new cycle is not required. The exact sub-steps for reaching Erlang are not established here, so this is the route condition, not a complete unlock checklist. The ending guide describes the sequence and continuation after the standard ending.
How the two endings differ
| Ending | Route condition | Circlet scene | Possible thematic reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Defeat the Broken Shell without completing Erlang’s hidden route first. | The Old Monkey places the golden circlet on the Destined One. | The ending can be read as inheritance of Wukong’s role and a continuation of the existing order. |
| Alternate, often called true or secret | Complete Erlang’s hidden route, then defeat the Broken Shell again. | The Old Monkey does not place the circlet. | The scene can be read as a refusal of suppression and a break in the cycle. |
The plot events and circlet outcomes are described in the ending guide. The thematic readings are interpretations, not confirmed statements of developer intent.

What does the alternate ending mean?
One reading connects the Destined One’s inheritance of Wukong’s Mind-Intent with the decision not to accept the circlet. On that interpretation, the animated sequence evokes Journey to the West in reverse: rather than repeating suppression and enshrinement, its imagery suggests undoing that cycle. This is a reading of the game’s imagery and lore, not an explanation attributed to the developers. The Great Sage’s Remnant lore analysis develops that interpretation.
A separate interpretation argues that the game withholds the name “Sun Wukong” until the hidden ending’s reveal. That is a claim about how the story names its central figure, not a literal explanation supplied by the developers. The Destined One lore analysis discusses the naming question.
