If Diablo II: Resurrected closes before its menu, start by checking whether your PC meets Blizzard’s published requirements, then identify your graphics card and driver with DxDiag. Next, match the failure stage to Blizzard’s relevant support track: graphics initialization, general crash errors, overlays, or incompatible third-party software. These checks help narrow the cause; the available evidence does not establish one universal fix.
First, identify when the crash happens
Write down the point at which the game exits. A failure before any game window appears, a “Failed to Initialize Graphics Device” message, a crash during the intro or loading, and a crash after reaching gameplay are different clues. Blizzard lists separate support tracks for general lockups or crash errors and for graphics-device initialization, so the exact stage and wording can help direct your next step.
- Does the game close before a window or menu appears?
- Does it show an error, especially one about initializing the graphics device?
- Does it reach the intro, loading screen, or gameplay before closing?
- Does it return to the desktop without showing an error?
One September 2024 player described both immediate crashes and crashes after playing, sometimes returning to the desktop without an error. That report illustrates why recording the timing matters; a single forum post cannot show how common the issue is or establish a fix.
Compare your PC with Blizzard’s published requirements
Blizzard’s PC launch guide, published in 2021, lists these minimum and recommended specifications. Treat them as Blizzard’s published baseline, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current Windows configuration. Check Blizzard’s current support details before buying parts or concluding that a system is compatible.

Check the graphics card and driver with DxDiag
- Open the Windows Start menu, type DxDiag, and launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether to check for digitally signed drivers, follow the on-screen prompt.
- Open the Display tab and note the graphics adapter name, driver version, and the reported status or notes.
- Use the adapter name to find the relevant driver from the card manufacturer—Nvidia, AMD, or Intel—and compare it with the version installed. Blizzard’s general Windows guidance recommends identifying the card and driver this way, then obtaining a current driver from its manufacturer.
- If DxDiag reports a problem on the Display tab, use that status as a troubleshooting clue. It does not by itself prove DirectX is the cause of every Diablo II: Resurrected crash.
See Blizzard’s Windows driver identification guidance and DirectX diagnostic guidance. Record the driver version before changing it so you can describe the system accurately if you need support.

Choose the Blizzard support track that matches the failure
Blizzard’s support index lists distinct tracks for Diablo II: Resurrected lockups and crash errors, “The application encountered an unexpected error,” “Failed to Initialize Graphics Device,” overlay incompatibilities, and incompatible third-party software. Use the title and exact error wording to select the closest match in the Blizzard support search results.
- Graphics-device initialization: Prioritize the graphics adapter, driver version, and any DxDiag Display-tab status.
- Unexpected error or general crash: Keep the full text or code and the failure stage available when consulting the matching support article.
- Crash associated with an overlay or other software: Blizzard lists overlay incompatibilities and incompatible third-party software as possible support categories. Treat these as avenues to investigate, not proof that a particular program caused your crash.
The support index shows recent updates, but the linked article contents were not available to verify here. For that reason, follow the live instructions on Blizzard’s page rather than assuming a specific sequence of steps or that disabling one overlay, reinstalling the game, or changing compatibility settings will resolve every case.

Use crash details as clues, not universal diagnoses
A 2023 Blizzard forum thread describes one laptop case where the crash log named an Intel graphics driver file and a moderator said that laptop’s Intel integrated-graphics setup was unsupported. That is a case-specific finding, not evidence that all Intel graphics or all laptops are unsupported. If a log names a driver file, include that exact name when seeking help, but do not generalize from another player’s hardware.
Blizzard describes Diablo II: Resurrected as digital-only, with no physical version, in its launch guide. A boxed copy or a hardware purchase is not a diagnostic step for a game that closes on startup.

Prepare useful information before escalating
When the cause is still unclear, collect the details that distinguish a graphics problem from a broader crash or software conflict:
- When the game closes: before a window, during graphics initialization, during intro or loading, or during gameplay.
- The full error text or code, or that no error appeared.
- Your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, and installed RAM.
- The graphics driver version and any status reported on DxDiag’s Display tab.
- Whether the crash is consistent or intermittent, and whether the timing changes.
Use those details with the closest matching Blizzard support article or when asking Blizzard support for help. A forum report can describe one person’s symptoms, but it cannot establish the frequency of the problem or verify a fix for your system.
