In Genshin Impact’s Sumeru desert, “You don’t have enough clearance” means your Scarlet Sand Slate lacks permission to operate that ruin device. Progress the Slate through the related quests—especially Dual Evidence—then return to the locked mechanism.
What “not enough clearance” means
The Scarlet Sand Slate is an in-game quest item used to control devices in the ruins of King Deshret. Its tutorial explains: “The activated Scarlet Sand Slate possesses special ‘clearance’ that will allow you to control various devices within the ruins King Deshret left behind.” As its clearance increases, more devices become usable and some previously inaccessible areas open up. HoYoWiki describes the Slate’s clearance progression.
This is not a request for a separate key or purchasable item. The message indicates that the relevant Slate progression has not been completed.
How to get the clearance you need
If you have not finished Golden Slumber
Continue the Golden Slumber world quest series first. It provides earlier Scarlet Sand Slate progression. Completing it is also a prerequisite for the follow-up quest Dual Evidence.
If Golden Slumber is complete
- After the daily reset, return to the Statue of The Seven near Aaru Village to begin Dual Evidence.
- Open the Scarlet Sand Slate’s guidance and follow it to the Place of Rebirth, Place of Breath, and Place of Swallowing.
- Complete the objectives in all three areas. This is the quest progression for obtaining full clearance.
- Return to the device that gave the message and try interacting with it again.
The Dual Evidence walkthrough and HoYoLAB’s creator guide provide additional walkthrough detail.
Why Golden Slumber may not be enough
Golden Slumber grants earlier clearance, but completing it does not necessarily unlock every ruin mechanism or room. Dual Evidence, part of Old Notes and New Friends, sends you through the three named areas to progress toward full clearance. If the Slate still denies access after Golden Slumber, check your quest list for Dual Evidence rather than looking for another item.
The Scarlet Sand Slate reference also lists a separate “City of Gurabad” clearance entry, obtained by interacting with Note 6 in the Pathfinders’ Log set. That entry is distinct from the main quest progression through the three areas. The Slate reference lists its clearance entries and sources.

- Golden Slumber is unfinished: continue that quest series to advance the Slate.
- Golden Slumber is finished, but Dual Evidence has not started: return to the Statue of The Seven near Aaru Village after the daily reset.
- Dual Evidence is active: use the Slate’s guidance and complete the Place of Rebirth, Place of Breath, and Place of Swallowing objectives.
- You believe you have completed the relevant progression: check the Slate and current quest objective, then make sure the device is a Scarlet Sand Slate clearance mechanism. This advice applies to that Sumeru desert system; a different puzzle or a modded or localized context may use similar wording differently.
