Age of Mythology: Retold Review — Just How You Remember It, but Better

Age of Mythology: Retold preserves the original’s mythic campaign and atmosphere while rebuilding its presentation and adding imperfect automation. Here’s what returning and new players should know.

Age of Mythology: Retold is a substantial rebuild that preserves the campaign, mythic spectacle and atmosphere that made the original memorable while refreshing its visuals and adding systems to ease resource management. It is a strong return for fans and a more approachable entry point for newcomers, though automation is imperfect and one reviewer observed performance dips on a specific laptop. The verdict here is grounded in Neowin’s pre-release PC review; multiplayer was not tested.

Is Age of Mythology: Retold worth it?

For players drawn to myth-themed real-time strategy and a campaign with varied objectives, Retold makes a persuasive case. Neowin reviewer Pulasthi Ariyasinghe scored it 9.5/10 after more than a dozen hours with a pre-release Steam PC copy provided by Microsoft. He praised the missions, presentation, music and atmosphere, and found the refresh faithful to the original’s character. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a multiplayer review or a benchmark of the current build. Read Neowin’s review.

The experience is especially appealing if you want a campaign that introduces distinct civilizations and mixes mythic units and god powers into conventional base-building and combat. Returning players get familiar music and broad story beats with rebuilt presentation; new players can lean on automation rather than immediately mastering every worker assignment. Competitive players should treat the review’s verdict as campaign-focused: the reviewer did not test multiplayer.

Is Retold a remake or a remaster?

It is more than a higher-resolution re-release. Neowin describes recreated visuals and animations, reworked cutscenes and an updated interface alongside systems changes. The intent is to retain the original’s identity while making the experience feel newly presented and more accessible. The review’s praise is about this combination of continuity and refresh, not a claim that every detail is identical to the original.

What changed—and what still feels familiar?

Campaign and pantheons

The campaign’s varied objectives and introductions to different factions are central to its appeal. The review discusses Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean play styles, with heroes, myth units, choices among gods and powerful god abilities shaping how a match unfolds. Progression culminates in the Wonder Age, giving late-game play a mythic payoff. Steam’s current listing also presents Chinese and Japanese content through the Immortal Pillars and Heavenly Spear expansions; those additions extend the available pantheons beyond the four discussed in the review. Check Steam’s current listing for the live content and edition details.

Presentation, sound and interface

Ariyasinghe highlights the updated cutscenes, recreated visuals and animations, returning soundtrack and sound effects, and revised user interface. The effect is not simply nostalgia through familiar music: the presentation is rebuilt around the same mythic tone. The review particularly values how the campaign’s spectacle and atmosphere survive the refresh.

Automation and the learning curve

The Villager Priority System can reduce the effort of assigning workers to gather resources, while automated powers and scouting can help players who are still learning the pace of an RTS. In the reviewer’s experience, however, automatic decisions were not always timely or efficient: villagers could respond slowly or take inefficient trips. He found direct, manual worker assignment faster and more effective. Treat automation as a useful support option, not a substitute for micromanagement when efficiency matters.

How did it perform on the reviewer’s PC?

The performance comments are an individual pre-release observation, not a controlled comparison or prediction for every PC. Ariyasinghe played on a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with an RTX 3060 Laptop GPU with 6 GB VRAM, Ryzen 7 5800H and 16 GB RAM, at 1440p from an NVMe SSD. In a comparison scene, he reported more than 200 FPS in Age of Mythology: Extended Edition and barely 60 FPS in Retold; during intense campaign moments, he saw occasional drops into single digits, even with ray tracing disabled. Those figures belong to that machine, scene and pre-release experience, so they should not be read as current-build benchmark results.

What modes and editions should you consider?

Steam currently lists single-player, online PvP, online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, a level editor and controller integration. These are listing features, not modes independently assessed in the Neowin review: multiplayer was not tested during that pre-release review. If online competition or co-op is your main reason to buy, look for current player feedback and listing details rather than treating the campaign review as a verdict on those modes.

Content has expanded since launch. Steam lists Immortal Pillars, featuring the Chinese pantheon, and Heavenly Spear, featuring the Japanese pantheon, as expansions. The available listing may change, as can regional prices and what an edition includes. Before purchase, compare the standard game, Premium Edition and any separate expansions by the campaigns and pantheons you want, then confirm the exact entitlements on the current store page. No fixed edition bundle or price is assumed here.

Who should play it?

  • Returning fans: A good fit if you want the recognizable campaign, soundtrack and mythological identity presented with rebuilt visuals and interface.
  • New RTS players: Automation can help with resource assignments and powers while you learn, although taking control of workers manually can be more efficient.
  • Campaign-first players: The review’s strongest evidence is its praise for mission variety, faction introductions and mythic atmosphere.
  • Multiplayer-focused players: Steam lists online PvP and co-op, but the review did not test them, so this assessment cannot establish their quality.
  • Performance-sensitive PC players: Compare your hardware with Steam’s current requirements and seek results for a similar configuration; the review’s laptop figures are specific to one pre-release setup.
