For a gun-focused, self-buffing style, build around Incarnate; for summoned attackers and support, choose Dead Ringer; for a persistent companion, build around Phase Phamiliar. The key to all three is Vex’s Phase Covenant trait: her Action Skills attune to the element of her currently equipped weapon, so your weapon choice can change the element of your skill damage.
How to choose a Vex build
Vex is Borderlands 4’s Siren Vault Hunter. Her three signature Action Skills—Incarnate, Dead Ringer, and Phase Phamiliar—support different combat styles rather than one universally superior setup. Choose according to how you want to fight, whether you need more survivability or support, and whether you are leveling or assembling an endgame loadout.

- Incarnate: Vex takes the lead, combining personal buffs and gun damage.
- Dead Ringer: Reapers and Spectres join the fight as summoned attackers.
- Phase Phamiliar: Trouble stays alongside Vex as a companion with offensive and defensive utility.
Gearbox Creative Director Randy Varnell describes the underlying mechanic in the PlayStation Blog’s Borderlands 4 overview: Vex’s Action Skills “attune to the element of the weapon she currently has equipped.” That makes elemental weapon variety useful: switch to an element suited to the encounter instead of treating one element as mandatory. Each Vault Hunter also has Action Skills, augments, capstones, and passive skills arranged across three branching paths.
Incarnate: a self-buff and gunplay build
Incarnate suits players who want Vex’s own abilities, kill-skill interactions, and weapon damage to drive the build. PC Gamer’s endgame example, called Vexcalation, emphasizes kinetic damage and a bleed interaction. The guide’s suggested equipment is a recommendation, not an official requirement or an independently established best-in-slot list.

Dead Ringer: a Reaper and Spectre summon build
Dead Ringer is the choice for players who want summoned allies contributing additional attacks while Vex fights. PC Gamer’s Fourth Seal setup uses Reapers and Spectres and recommends carrying multiple elements so the summons can benefit from different attunements. This approach can add both offensive pressure and support to Vex’s combat; it is a playstyle option, not a controlled ranking over Incarnate or Phase Phamiliar.
For leveling, PC Gamer’s suggested route starts around Dead Ringer and Spectres, invests in status-effect damage, and changes elemental attunements to exploit different elements. It is a distinct progression from the Incarnate-focused route below, so choose the one that matches how you want to play rather than combining point-by-point instructions from both.
Phase Phamiliar: build around Trouble
Choose Phase Phamiliar if you want a companion-focused approach. Epic’s Borderlands 4 class guide describes Trouble as able to teleport and transform into a larger Badass version, with melee and ranged attacks, a taunt, and an instant heal. Those tools make Trouble relevant to both damage and survivability. PC Gamer’s Here Comes Trouble build likewise emphasizes elemental damage and staying power.

A level 1–60 Incarnate route
For players who prefer a self-focused gun build while progressing, PlayBorderlands lays out a level 1–60 route that begins with Incarnate, critical-hit skills, Bleed, and kill-triggered bonuses, then adds gun damage and survivability. Its advice is specific to that route—not a requirement for every Vex player.
- Start with Incarnate and the route’s critical-hit focus. The guide builds toward critical hits and Bleed, then layers on bonuses triggered by kills.
- Add gun damage and survivability as you progress. The route expands beyond its early damage focus rather than treating one opening investment as the entire build.
- Use Jakobs weapons for this particular approach. PlayBorderlands’ leveling guide recommends Jakobs weapons to support its critical-hit and ricochet approach.
- Activate Incarnate when a magazine is running low. The guide links this timing to the reload interaction with Witchy Trigger Finger.
- Avoid spending too long farming early gear. The guide cautions that characters level quickly and early weapons are soon outgrown.
If you would rather play with summons or Trouble, follow the skill path that supports that style instead; this progression is not a universal point-by-point prescription.
How to decide what is best for you
The question “What’s the best Borderlands 4 Vex build?” has a playstyle-dependent answer. PCGamesN’s Vex guide also frames the choice around how a player likes to play. Use these distinctions to make a practical choice:
| Build direction | Choose it if you want | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Incarnate | Vex’s buffs and gunplay to be the focus | The cited endgame example centers on kinetic damage and Bleed; the cited leveling route uses critical-hit skills and Jakobs weapons. |
| Dead Ringer | Reapers and Spectres adding attacks and support | The cited approach uses multiple elements and changes attunements; PC Gamer’s leveling example begins with summons and status-effect damage. |
| Phase Phamiliar | Trouble to contribute attacks and utility | Epic describes a companion with a taunt and instant heal as well as melee, ranged, and Badass-form attacks. |
Elemental flexibility matters whichever route you pick: carry weapons with elements that suit the situations you face, since the equipped weapon determines Action Skill attunement. Treat named gear and skill paths as guide-specific recommendations, and verify current descriptions and availability in your game.
