CurseForge’s built-in server hosting is a paid service, and self-hosting still uses your computer, internet connection, electricity, and time.
What “free” means for a CurseForge server
There are two different ways to run a CurseForge modpack multiplayer server:
- Self-host it: Run the server on a computer you control. This avoids a hosting-plan bill, but it is not cost-free in every sense: you supply the hardware, connection, electricity, setup, and ongoing management.
- Use CurseForge’s built-in hosting: CurseForge’s integrated server flow is a paid hosted option. Its support guide says users choose a modpack with a matching server pack, select a plan and region, and purchase. Shockbyte provisions and supports the server, while Tebex handles billing. Whether self-hosting will perform well depends on the computer, modpack, and number of players. The available sources do not establish a universal hardware specification or quantify self-hosting costs.
How to self-host a CurseForge modpack
1. Find the modpack’s server files
Open the desired modpack’s profile folder in CurseForge and check whether its author provides a matching server pack. A server pack is a specially prepared version of a modpack for multiplayer; it is not safe to assume that every pack has one or that the client’s files can simply be copied to a server. CurseForge’s server-pack tutorial explains that authors can attach server files to the corresponding modpack file.

2. Follow that pack’s setup instructions
Use the instructions provided by the pack author. CurseForge identifies mods and config as core server-pack folders, with kubejs included when relevant. Do not add or remove files based on assumptions; pack-specific setup may differ.
3. Match the server to the players’ clients
Check that the Minecraft version, modloader, and modpack/server-pack version align. CurseForge documents support for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla, but warns that mods and modpacks are not universally compatible across game versions and loaders. Players need compatible client installations. CurseForge’s modloader documentation covers the available loader types.

4. Run it on a computer you control
The exact installation, firewall, router, and port-forwarding steps depend on your operating system, network, and pack. The sources cited here do not provide universal instructions for those steps, so use the server pack’s documentation and the guidance appropriate to your setup.
What CurseForge’s paid hosting includes
CurseForge’s support guide, modified 8 September 2026, lists three monthly plans. The player ranges are vendor suggestions, not independent performance benchmarks; the guide notes that a heavier modpack may need a larger plan even with fewer players. Check the checkout price before purchasing because plans and prices can change.

The guide says CurseForge server creation supports about 9,000 modpacks, while support for any modpack—including custom ones—is planned for a future version. That does not mean every custom pack is supported today. Consult the current plan and compatibility details before choosing this route.
Free third-party hosting: what to verify
A provider may offer a free tier, but the sources cited here do not verify any provider’s current offer, modpack compatibility, resource limits, queues, or uptime. Do not treat “free hosting” as guaranteed to support a particular CurseForge pack. Before relying on a third-party service, check its current terms and confirm that it accepts the exact Minecraft version, loader, and server pack you intend to use.
