No—the base games ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are paid PC games on the official storefront listings checked. Some maps and add-ons are free, but they do not include the base game. Store prices and promotions can change by region and date.
What does “ARK” refer to?
On PC, “ARK” can refer to two separate games: the original ARK: Survival Evolved and the newer ARK: Survival Ascended. Neither should be confused with a free map or add-on listed for that game.

These are storefront prices, not universal prices; check the store for your region and current price. Steam · Epic Games Store |
| ARK: Survival Ascended | Epic’s U.S. storefront search result listed the base game at $44.99 when accessed in 2026. | It is a separate paid game, described in the listing as a rebuild using Unreal Engine 5. The price comes from a search result rather than a directly opened product page, so verify it on Epic before buying. Epic Games Store |
Why do some ARK listings say “Free”?
Stores can list a map or other add-on separately from the game it requires. For Survival Evolved, Steam lists free maps including Valguero, Ragnarok, The Center, Crystal Isles, Fjordur, and Lost Island alongside the separately priced base game. See the Steam listing.
Epic’s Survival Ascended add-on catalog also includes free entries, such as Genesis Ascended Part 1, Extinction Ascended, Aberration Ascended, Ragnarok Ascended, Scorched Earth Ascended, Valguero, and The Center. The catalog includes paid add-ons as well. A free entry there is not ownership of the base game. View the Epic add-on catalog.
#1 Best Overall
- Official ARK: Survival Evolved licensed merchandise, featuring the Dodo sculpted in textured iron
- Compact pin measuring about 1.6 in (4 cm) across and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) thick - light enough for caps, denim and tote bags
- Raised, textured surface gives the design real depth instead of a flat printed look
- Made in Japan - the pin back attaches securely and sits flat without dragging the fabric down
- A gift for ARK players, survival game fans, and dinosaur enthusiasts
For example, Epic labels Scorched Earth Ascended as a free Windows add-on. That label applies to the add-on, not to ARK: Survival Ascended. Scorched Earth Ascended on Epic.
Is ARK free on Steam?
No. Steam lists ARK: Survival Evolved as a purchase, not as a free-to-play game. Steam’s free-to-play category means a game is free to download and play, though it may offer optional in-game purchases; a free map listed on a game’s store page does not meet that definition for the paid base game. Could you get ARK free during a promotion?
A limited-time giveaway or promotion may offer a game at no cost, but that is different from the game being permanently free-to-play. The checked listings establish the base games’ paid status and examples of free add-ons; they do not establish whether a particular account has an entitlement from an earlier offer. Check your library and account purchase history if you think you claimed a copy.
Quick Recap
How to check whether a listing is the game or just an add-on
- Open the store page and confirm the full title: ARK: Survival Evolved or ARK: Survival Ascended.
- Look for the product type. A base-game page offers the game itself; an entry labeled “Add-On” is separate content.
- Check the price and platform on the page for your store region. Prices and promotions can change, and a free add-on does not make the base game free.
