What Hot Rock Ore is
Hot Rock Ore is an in-game crafting material associated with The Way of Winter, the PvE survival and exploration scenario set in Arkam. The scenario’s official Snowy Realm Survival Manual, published by Once Human / NetEase Games on 2024-10-17, describes regions including the cold Onyx Tundra and Vena Fjord as well as the volcanic Ember Strand. Temperature changes with region, weather, time of day, environment, and items, so thermal control is part of surviving the scenario.
How to mine Hot Rock Ore safely
- Find a Hot Rock node in The Way of Winter. The available references do not establish dependable current coordinates or a complete location map, so use exploration and the in-game map rather than relying on an unverified farming route.
- Cool the node before getting close. The community-maintained Once Human Wiki item reference specifically recommends an ice item, naming Improved Frost Grenades or Snowballs. The official manual independently confirms that Frost Grenades “significantly reduce[] the temperature within [their] blast range,” but it does not document Hot Rock mining specifically.
- Approach and mine only after cooling it. The item reference warns that a Hot Rock node can explode if approached before it is neutralized. It does not specify a safe distance, an exact quantity of cooling items, or a universal guarantee that one method will work in every situation; wait until the node is no longer hot before attempting to harvest it.
Do not confuse cooling with heating: the official manual says Molotov Cocktails and Thermite Grenades raise temperature within their blast ranges, while Frost Grenades lower it.
What can you use Hot Rock Ore for?
A Lootward video description, published 2024-10-24, says Hot Rock Ore can be used with the Molecular Structure specialization to craft Fire Crystals. Treat that as version-dated secondary information rather than a verified current recipe: open the crafting screen in your game and check whether Fire Crystals and the required specialization still list Hot Rock Ore before spending materials. The official manual does not confirm this recipe.
