TechSpot reported that Microsoft’s March 2024 game-release notice warned Windows Minecraft players that updating through the Xbox app could delete their worlds. The report described a risk, not a confirmed or quantified number of lost worlds. It also said other launchers were not affected at the time. Which Minecraft editions were affected?
The report did not establish whether the warning applied to Minecraft: Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, or both. There is not enough evidence to narrow the incident to one edition.
What workaround was reported at the time?
TechSpot said Microsoft recommended using the Gaming Services Repair Tool. If the repair succeeded, it updated Gaming Services to version 19.87.13001.0. The report also described using another launcher as an alternative during the incident. Is it safe to update through the Xbox app now?
The warning’s present-day status is unverified. The 2024 report said PC Game Pass users were likely to encounter the issue because the service primarily operated through the Xbox app, and that the reporter had not received reports of problems from players installing through Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net. Those observations do not establish that one route is safer today. No current official source available here confirms that an equivalent warning is active in October 2026.
Which installation routes does Minecraft document?
Minecraft Help currently documents installing the Minecraft Launcher through either the Xbox app or Minecraft.net. Its instructions say that the Minecraft.net download still requires signing into Microsoft Store to install properly. What to check if the Launcher or sign-in is not working
For Launcher troubleshooting, Minecraft Help recommends signing into the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app with the same Microsoft account that owns the Minecraft license. Its sign-in guidance also notes that signing into the Xbox app can sometimes resolve sign-in errors.
