2K and Firaxis Games announced Sid Meier’s Civilization VII during Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live on June 7, 2024, with a planned 2025 launch. The game has since launched: its official release date was February 11, 2025. It is available across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac and Linux, with storefronts and editions varying by platform.
What was announced at Summer Game Fest?
The June 7, 2024 announcement introduced Civilization VII as a new chapter in the historical strategy franchise. Its cinematic trailer framed the game around humanity’s progress through history and the challenge of building a lasting legacy. The announcement did not demonstrate detailed gameplay mechanics; 2K promised a full gameplay showcase in August. 2K’s announcement described the trailer as showcasing “humanity’s progress through history and the enduring challenge of building a legacy that stands the test of time.”

When did Civilization VII come out?
The original announcement gave a 2025 launch window. That forecast was superseded: Civilization VII launched on February 11, 2025, according to the official 2K game page.

What kind of game is Civilization VII?
2K’s launch description says players guide a historical story by choosing a new civilization to represent their empire in each Age of human advancement. In short, it is a historical strategy game about steering an empire through successive Ages. That premise is a useful orientation, but it should not be mistaken for a detailed account of mechanics shown in the 2024 announcement trailer.

Are physical editions available?
Yes. The official Civilization VII FAQ, published January 10, 2025 and updated July 8, 2026, lists physical and digital options depending on platform and edition. Check the retailer’s regional listing for the exact format and current stock.

What is in the Collector’s Edition?
The FAQ describes a physical Collector’s Edition set with a decorative “Passage of Time” clock, scout figure, logo pin, challenge coin, postcards, art print and yield-icon patch set. It comes in two versions: one includes a Steam PC Founders Edition and one does not. Confirm which version a listing offers before buying; the FAQ does not establish current availability.

Does Civilization VII require a 2K Account?
A linked 2K Account is required for online features, including multiplayer. The official FAQ says single-player does not require a linked account. It also says players with linked 2K Accounts can play multiplayer across platforms.
Can your PC run Civilization VII?
2K’s PC system requirements page, updated May 26, 2026, lists separate Windows, Mac and Linux specifications. For Windows, its performance tiers are:
