Beast of Reincarnation, the action RPG from Pokémon developer Game Freak, launched on August 4, 2026. Set in a blight-ravaged Japan in the year 4026, it follows Emma and her canine companion Koo. Its central combat twist pairs Emma’s real-time katana fighting with command-based abilities for Koo.
What kind of game is Beast of Reincarnation?
Game Freak describes it as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG.” Rather than making the pair fight in the same way, the game gives Emma direct sword combat and lets the player issue commands for Koo’s special skills. The director’s explanation of that design appeared in Xbox Wire’s January 22, 2026 feature.

What is the story and setting?
The game takes place in Japan in 4026, where blight changes the landscape and threatens the world. Emma was born afflicted by blight, which gives her the power to manipulate plants. Feared and shunned, she works as a Sealer, hunting malefacts and absorbing their blight. Her vine-like hair also helps her cross obstacles and can be used to attack.
Koo is a malefact—a creature regarded as a threat—but becomes Emma’s companion. The two travel west in search of the Beast of Reincarnation, which Xbox Wire identifies as the source of all blight. Their journey takes them through regions where blight can transform plains or wasteland into forest. Giant malefacts called Nushi create blighted forests; defeating them lets Emma and Koo acquire their powers and skills, according to the director’s Xbox Wire breakdown.

How does combat work?
Emma fights in real time
Emma uses fast-paced katana attacks and can parry enemy blows. A successful parry earns points that can be spent on Koo’s abilities, making defense part of the pair’s command-based combat loop.
Koo’s commands create tactical pauses
When the player opens Koo’s command menu, combat slows, giving time to assess the fight and choose an ability. The system borrows the feel of turn-based RPG commands without removing Emma’s real-time action. The PlayStation Blog explanation also describes Emma using her plant-like hair to traverse collapsed bridges and high walls, as well as to attack.

Difficulty and equipment
In the January 2026 Xbox Wire feature, the director described three difficulty settings: Normal, Hard, and Story. Story Mode has more forgiving parry timing and reduces enemy damage. The same feature names Spirit Stones, new katanas for Emma, and Charms for Koo as equipment with specialized bonuses. The official Xbox product page also lists skill trees and says players can build ranged, stealthy, or aggressive approaches, though it does not give further detail about those options.

The date and platforms are listed on the official Xbox product page; the PlayStation announcement confirms the PS5 launch date.
