No official Half-Life 3 announcement arrived in 2025, according to Ars Technica’s December 2025 reporting. The year’s predictions were speculation, not a confirmed Valve announcement plan—and a predicted announcement date would not have been a release date.

Valve’s public About Us page describes the company’s history and lists Half-Life: Alyx, but it does not announce Half-Life 3 or give an announcement window. Its general reference to playtests and prototypes is not confirmation of a Half-Life 3 playtest.
Why did people expect an announcement?
Alleged HLX clues
In February 2025, Ars Technica covered alleged code evidence associated by outside observers with “HLX,” alongside an outside commentator’s claims about the project’s development stage: Ars Technica, February 2025. This was reporting about leaks and commentary, not an announcement from Valve. The reporting does not establish that Valve officially confirmed HLX as the codename for Half-Life 3.

Creator commentary and fan predictions

Predictions built on leaks, interpretations, or fan discussion may generate excitement, but they should not be mistaken for a date Valve has announced.
Ars Technica’s December article also discussed an outside journalist’s speculation about a possible future tie-in. That possibility did not amount to a confirmed announcement plan.

What is officially known about Half-Life?
Valve says its debut title, Half-Life, was released in 1998, and its company page lists Half-Life: Alyx among its games. Those are established points in the series’ history; they do not confirm a new sequel. Valve’s public page can show what the company has chosen to state publicly, but its silence cannot establish whether private development exists.
