Place 12 End Portal Frame blocks in a ring around an empty 3×3 center, with every frame facing inward. Put an Eye of Ender in each frame; the portal activates when all 12 are correctly oriented and filled.
Build the 12-frame ring
- Enter Creative Mode and find End Portal Frame in the inventory. If you do not see it in the expected category, search by its name.
- Leave an empty 3×3 area for the portal surface. Place the 12 frames around its edge; the full footprint is 5×5 blocks.
- Stand inside the empty center as you place the frames. Make sure each frame’s opening faces toward the center.
- Place one Eye of Ender in each of the 12 frames. The portal activates when every frame faces inward and contains an eye.
Mojang says End Portal Frames can be obtained from Creative inventory or commands; they naturally generate in stronghold portal rooms, and Survival players cannot create or destroy them. Mojang’s End Portal Frame article explains those acquisition limits and the eye-activation condition. The manual ring layout and advice to place the frames while standing in the center are documented by the Minecraft Wiki.
Where to find the frame in Creative inventory
The category depends on edition and version, so searching for the item name is the most reliable route. Mojang’s Java Snapshot 22w44a notes moved End Portal Frames to Functional Blocks; the Bedrock 1.20.70/71 changelog moved them to Nature. These are locations documented for those specific releases, not a guarantee about every later version.
If the portal does not activate
Check the ring frame by frame: there must be 12 frames, every opening must point toward the center, and every frame must contain an Eye of Ender. A frame facing outward or missing an eye prevents activation.

Creative-built portals and stronghold portals
The construction steps above work in Creative Mode regardless of whether a naturally generated portal is available nearby. Mojang says Java Edition strongholds have an End portal, while only some Bedrock strongholds do. In naturally generated portal rooms, each frame has a 10% chance of already containing an Eye of Ender, according to Mojang’s article.
