For a creative party game, try Gartic Phone; for quick drawing-and-guessing rounds, choose Skribbl.io; for team word clues, open Codenames Online; and for a broader tabletop-style selection, use Board Game Arena. Each runs in a browser, but the games suit different kinds of groups—and Board Game Arena’s Premium games may require a paid membership.

Choose a game by the kind of play your group wants

Game Best fit How a group joins Cost or access note
Gartic Phone Creative drawing-and-description party play Start a game and invite friends; the official page recommends using a voice call alongside it. The cited page does not state a price.
Skribbl.io Competitive drawing and guessing Create a private room, set options such as rounds and hints, and share the invitation link. The site describes it as free to play.
Codenames Online Team-based word clues Create a room, adjust settings, then share its URL with players. The publisher describes the browser game as free and says no account or download is required.
Board Game Arena Groups choosing among browser-based board games Create a table for a game and invite friends. Games run in a browser without installation, but not every game is free. The FAQ says one Premium membership is enough for friends to play Premium games together.

Gartic Phone: a drawing telephone party game

Gartic Phone passes an idea through a chain of writing, drawing, and description: players write a quirky sentence, draw a sentence they receive, then describe a drawing. The fun comes from watching a prompt shift as it moves through the group, rather than competing to identify a single correct picture. Its official page recommends pairing the game with a voice call, which gives players a way to chat while they play.

Choose it when your group wants a social, creative activity and is happy for the results to be unpredictable. Start a session on Gartic Phone, then arrange a separate voice call if you want to follow the site’s recommendation.

Skribbl.io: private drawing-and-guessing rounds

Skribbl.io is a multiplayer drawing-and-guessing game. One player draws while the others try to guess the word, making it a natural choice for a group that wants short competitive turns rather than a shared story-making game.

Codenames Online: team word clues in a browser

Codenames Online is a browser version of the team word-clue game. Players work in teams to connect words through clues, so it suits groups that would rather discuss associations and strategy than draw or act out prompts. Czech Games Edition says the online version is free and requires neither an account nor a download.

  1. Open Codenames Online and create a room.
  2. Adjust the room settings for your group.
  3. Share the room URL with the people you want to play with.

The publisher says the game offers 44 language word lists and custom lists. It also displays claims of more than 4 million unique users monthly and a 13-minute average session length; the page does not state the year or measurement period for those figures, so treat them as publisher-reported claims rather than independently audited statistics.

Board Game Arena: a browser-based board-game library

Board Game Arena is the broadest option here if your group wants to choose from tabletop-style games rather than settle on one party format. Its FAQ says games run directly in a browser without installation and explains how to create a table and invite a friend. The particular game determines the rules and pace, so check its listing when you want to know whether it fits your group or can accommodate slower, turn-based play.

Do not assume the entire library is free: the FAQ says only one Premium membership is needed for friends to play Premium games together. Check the access terms for the game you select before inviting everyone.

How to pick for your group

  • For improvisation and laughs: Choose Gartic Phone if passing drawings and descriptions around sounds more appealing than keeping score.
  • For quick rounds and guessing: Choose Skribbl.io if your group enjoys drawing under pressure and guessing each other’s words.
  • For teamwork and wordplay: Choose Codenames Online if players want to form teams and give clues.
  • For more game types: Choose Board Game Arena if the group would rather select a tabletop-style game, and check whether that title requires Premium access.

Before settling on a session, consider how many people are joining, whether everyone can play at the same time or would prefer a slower turn-based game, and how the room invitation works. The cited pages establish basic mechanics and access flows, not a common tested ranking or device-by-device compatibility comparison.
