Yes, you can build a mono-color Avatar Commander deck, but the mono-color character versions Wizards describes are tied to Jumpstart—not evidence of mono-color preconstructed Commander decks. In regular Commander, your commander’s color identity determines which cards you can include, so a mono-color commander cannot use cards outside that identity.
What “mono-colored” means in Avatar: The Last Airbender
Wizards designed multicolor versions of Avatar characters for the main set to give Commander players different options for favorite characters. It also developed mono-color character versions for Jumpstart, whose themes are usually built around one color. That is the sense in which the set brings mono-color Avatar cards back: the design connects them to Jumpstart, not to a confirmed lineup of mono-color Commander preconstructed decks. Wizards’ design explanation describes that distinction.
Why the mono-color option has a Commander catch
In standard Commander deck construction, a card’s color identity must fit within your commander’s color identity. A mono-color commander therefore restricts the deck to cards whose identities are within that single color; choosing a multicolor Avatar commander permits a different range of cards. A character’s theme or artwork does not override the card’s color identity. The Commander Rules Committee’s rules set out the restriction, and Wizards’ Avatar release notes explain relevant card rulings.
Format legality and deck construction are separate questions
Wizards’ release notes say Avatar TLA-coded cards are permitted in Commander and other listed formats. That answers whether the cards may be played in the format; it does not mean every Avatar card can go in every Commander deck. The commander’s color identity still governs deck construction under the standard rules.

Commander Box League uses an event-specific exception
Wizards Play Network’s in-store Commander Box League has special construction rules: players build 60-card decks from their Play Booster box, and the event says to ignore color-identity deckbuilding restrictions. This is a League variant, not a change to ordinary Commander rules. Check the official Commander Box League details for the event’s terms.
Which Avatar product fits the mono-color angle?
If you specifically want the mono-color character treatment, an Avatar Jumpstart Booster is the product connection Wizards makes. A randomized booster is not a promise of a particular character, and the design information does not establish that one unopened booster supplies a complete deck. Avatar Play Boosters are the broader set product for opening cards or Limited play, but randomized contents make them less direct if you are looking for a particular mono-color version. For a specific card, search for the single rather than assuming a booster will contain it.
