There is no single best first ability in Avowed: choose for the job you want your character to do. Consider Charge to close distance in melee, Tanglefoot to root a target while you cast or aim, or Parry if you want to lean into defensive timing. Avowed lets you mix ability trees, so these are playstyle-based starting points—not locked class choices or a definitive ranking.
Is Avowed classless?
Yes. You do not select a permanent Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard class. Instead, you build your character by choosing abilities across skill trees and equipping weapons. A character focused on melee can still take an ability from another tree, and a ranged or magic-focused character can add tools that suit the way they fight.
The names used for the trees have changed across coverage. Xbox Wire’s February 2025 launch article described Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike trees; a guide updated for the September 2026 Anniversary Update lists Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Cipher. Treat older descriptions as dated rather than as a definitive inventory of the current game. The official launch wording was: “Forge your own playstyle with four expansive skill trees—Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike—and fight using powerful weapons, magic, and unique abilities like Grimoire Snap and Blood Magic.” (Xbox Wire, February 18, 2025; The Wizard’s Tower, updated for the Anniversary Update.)
Which ability should you pick first?
Match the ability to the problem you want to solve in combat. The three options below have different jobs, so choosing among them is more useful than treating them as a universal tier list.

| Playstyle or need | Ability to consider | What it does for you | Evidence and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee; need to get into range | Charge | Closes distance quickly; PC Gamer also describes it breaking weak walls during exploration. | PC Gamer’s guide was published before launch and based on a preview build. Check the current in-game description and available ranks before investing. (PC Gamer.) |
| Magic or ranged combat; need a moment of space | Tanglefoot | Roots an enemy, creating an opening to cast safely or line up ranged attacks. | PC Gamer recommended it for a magic-focused approach in a pre-launch preview guide; it is a control option, not proof of a best build. (PC Gamer.) |
| Fighter-style combat; want to use defensive timing | Parry | A Ranger-branch passive that Xbox Wire specifically highlights as useful even for a Fighter-oriented character. | Its value depends on whether you intend to block, dodge, and parry rather than simply trade hits. (Xbox Wire, February 13, 2025.) |
Should you choose Charge or Tanglefoot?
Choose Charge if your main problem is reaching enemies
Charge is the more direct fit for a close-range character who needs an approach tool. Its reported utility for breaking weak walls can also help while exploring, though that detail comes from a pre-launch preview guide rather than a current-version comparison.
Choose Tanglefoot if your main problem is staying safe while attacking
Tanglefoot is the better fit when you want to hold a target in place long enough to cast or aim. That makes it useful beyond a pure wizard concept: a ranged character can also benefit from having a controlled target. Neither ability is established as stronger in every updated build.

Can you mix Fighter and Ranger abilities?
Yes. The trees are sources of abilities, not mutually exclusive classes. Xbox Wire’s beginner guide specifically calls out the Ranger-branch Parry passive for a Fighter-style build, illustrating why it can make sense to cross over when an ability serves your combat plan. A later guide says higher-tier skills require investment within their tree, so check the current in-game requirements before planning a deeper branch investment. (The Wizard’s Tower.)
What if you have not settled on a playstyle?
Try a flexible setup before committing to a narrow build. Xbox Wire says you can switch between two weapon loadouts and suggests combinations such as ranged and melee tools or a wand and grimoire. Read the ability descriptions in game, then pair weapons that cover different situations. A grimoire can also help with environmental puzzles, even if your main focus is Fighter- or Ranger-style combat. (Xbox Wire, February 13, 2025.)

When should you change your build instead of your gear?
If combat feels harder than expected, a new ability may not be the first fix. Xbox Wire advises upgrading equipment at the Party Camp workshop and notes that quest difficulty is tied more to gear than character level. It also recommends watching for unblockable attacks, using blocks and parries, and responding to weak-point indicators. You can reset your build by spending skeyts, but try improving equipment and defensive habits before paying for a reset. (Xbox Wire, February 13, 2025.)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How current are these recommendations?
These picks describe useful functions, not a current competitive meta. PC Gamer’s Charge and Tanglefoot recommendations come from a November 2024 pre-launch preview guide. Xbox Wire’s tips date from February 2025. Obsidian’s Patch 1.5 announcement in July 2025 says it added abilities and passives to Fighter and Ranger, which means launch-era advice may not cover every later option; the available announcement does not establish a comparative ranking of those additions. For a current decision, use the ability descriptions and requirements shown in your game. (Obsidian forum, Patch 1.5 notes.)
