Star Citizen is still an unfinished, playable alpha—not a completed 1.0 release. The old $700 million headline is also out of date: Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) said on June 2, 2026, that community funding for Star Citizen and Squadron 42 combined had passed $1 billion. That milestone measures funding across both projects, not the audited cost of making Star Citizen alone.
What does the $1 billion figure actually measure?
CIG’s June 2026 announcement describes the figure as lifetime community funding for Star Citizen and Squadron 42 together, accumulated over more than 12 years. It is a company-announced funding milestone—not a per-game budget, a measure of total development expenditure, or an independently audited account of how much it cost to build Star Citizen.
The distinction matters because the company’s annual accounts and its lifetime funding announcement describe different things. In CIG’s commentary on its 2024 accounts, the company said most pledge and counter sales that year were starter packs providing alpha access, ships, and digital items intended for in-game use. That helps explain what some of the funding represents, but it does not turn the lifetime figure into a simple development-cost total.
What has Star Citizen delivered, and what is still unfinished?
Playable alpha, not a finished launch
CIG described Star Citizen as pre-alpha throughout 2024. Players can access the evolving game, but its live availability should not be confused with a finished launch: the project has not reached 1.0, and the sources available do not establish a current 1.0 release date.

Alpha 4.0 brought specific, tangible changes
CIG’s 2024 accounting commentary identifies the late-2024 release of Alpha 4.0 as a major delivery. It brought the Pyro system and the initial phase of server meshing. Those are concrete additions to the playable project, but they do not mean all planned systems or promised scope are complete.
How to read the roadmap
RSI’s public roadmap companion describes the Progress Tracker as showing team plans up to four quarters ahead. It is useful for seeing what teams are working on and what they intend to tackle, but a planned or tracked item is not a guaranteed ship date. The monthly-report archive listed a September 2026 report as its latest entry at the time of that listing; the archive listing alone does not establish what work that report described.

What do CIG’s 2024 accounts show?
On June 7, 2026, CIG’s CFO published commentary on the company’s 2024 accounts, calling the year “a year of consolidation and delivery at Cloud Imperium.” The figures below are company-reported figures from that commentary. CIG said it used simple cost-accounting rules based on management accounts: income net of sales taxes was recorded as invoiced or accrued, while costs were recorded as incurred.
| 2024 measure | Company-reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Total income | $146.6 million | CIG’s reported income for 2024, under the company’s stated accounting approach. |
| Pledges and counter income | $116.3 million | A reported income category; CIG said most sales in it were starter packs with alpha access, ships, and digital items. |
| Trading costs | $152.9 million | CIG’s reported trading costs for 2024. |
| Loss after capex | $14.3 million | CIG’s reported loss after capital expenditure for 2024. |
| Employees at year-end | 1,031 | CIG’s reported headcount at the end of 2024. |
These figures provide a snapshot of one company’s reported 2024 income, costs, result, and workforce. They are not a ledger assigning historic expenditure to each game, and they should not be combined with the $1 billion community-funding milestone as though both figures measured the same thing.

Is Squadron 42 finished, and when is it expected?
Squadron 42 is the separate single-player campaign connected to Star Citizen; its schedule should not be treated as the schedule for Star Citizen’s 1.0 release. PC Gamer reported on August 27, 2026, that the planned timing had shifted from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. The report attributed the change partly to the studio not wanting the campaign’s launch to compete for attention with GTA 6.
Q2 2027 is therefore a reported plan, not a guaranteed release date. The available information does not establish that Squadron 42 has shipped, nor does the reported campaign window supply a date for Star Citizen 1.0.

What can players conclude about the project now?
- There is a playable, evolving game. Alpha 4.0’s Pyro system and initial server-meshing phase are identifiable deliveries, not proof that the larger project is complete.
- The funding milestone covers two projects. CIG’s $1 billion announcement refers to lifetime community funding for Star Citizen and Squadron 42 together.
- The two release questions are different. Squadron 42 has a reported Q2 2027 plan; no current Star Citizen 1.0 date is established by the sources cited here.
- Roadmap entries communicate plans. RSI says the Progress Tracker looks up to four quarters ahead, which makes it a planning view rather than a fixed release guarantee.
For ongoing status, readers can consult RSI’s public roadmap and monthly-report archive. Those sources show plans and periodic updates; the clearest measure of what has actually arrived remains the released game and its updates, distinguished from future targets.
