In Atlantic halibut larvae, “gaping jaw” describes a developmental malformation that can leave the mouth unable to close. It is not a video-game term, and the same phrase can also describe a person’s open mouth while yawning. This article covers the fish-development condition.

What does “gaping jaw” mean in Atlantic halibut?

It is a reported malformation in cultured Atlantic halibut larvae (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). The affected larva cannot close its mouth normally, which becomes critical as it moves from relying on yolk reserves to feeding externally. The 2011 Journal of Fish Biology study describes the condition in its account of early head development: PubMed record for the study.

What happens to affected larvae?

According to the 2011 study, affected larvae do not survive past first feeding: as the yolk reserves are depleted, they cannot switch to external feeding. A 2002 review similarly describes larvae with jaws locked open as unable to feed after yolk-sac absorption, followed by death. These reports concern larval aquaculture, not a human jaw symptom.

What anatomical changes have studies reported?

Fusion described in the 2011 study

The 2011 study reports that the inability to close the mouth appeared related to fusion of the interhyal with the hyosymplectic and ceratohyal—structures that are normally articulated. This is the interpretation in that study, not a mechanism established for every reported case. The study’s PubMed record

A different account in earlier work

In discussing earlier reports, the 2011 paper describes another morphological finding: the anterior parts of the ethmoid and Meckel’s cartilages were bent apart. The different descriptions should not be collapsed into a single settled explanation. Full 2011 developmental study

What might contribute to gaping jaw?

The sources discuss possible contributors, but do not establish one definitive cause. Proposals include changes in temperature or salinity, water flow, abrasion or injury to the head, and infection. These are hypotheses reported in the literature, not confirmed causes or prevention instructions.

The 2002 review recounts proposals that damaged tissue might be penetrated by opportunistic organisms and that the condition could be more frequent at higher temperatures. It also reports that incidence was not associated with total bacterial numbers in rearing water and that experimental challenges with named bacterial species had not increased incidence. Those historical findings do not rule a factor in or out universally. The review also notes limitations in the earlier evidence, while the 2011 paper cautions that earlier work could not establish root causes in its experimental setting. 2002 review in Diseases of Aquatic Organisms

Could “gaping jaw” mean yawning?

Yes. In ordinary language, the phrase may refer to the open mouth produced when someone yawns. That is a different subject from the fish malformation described above. For a general medical overview of yawning, see the Cleveland Clinic’s overview, last updated October 16, 2023.
