Best LAN Games for Windows PC: 15 Picks for Local Multiplayer

Looking for Windows PC games for a LAN party? One pick is directly confirmed for LAN PvP and co-op; the other 14 are local or co-op candidates to verify by edition.

“LAN game” and “local multiplayer game” are not interchangeable. A LAN match connects separate PCs over a local network; shared-screen play puts players together at one PC, while online co-op may still rely on internet matchmaking. Of these 15 Windows picks, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the only one directly confirmed here with Steam’s LAN PvP and LAN co-op tags. The rest are useful local or co-op candidates, but their current editions should not be treated as LAN-verified.

How to choose a game for a PC LAN gathering

Start with the setup you actually want. If every player will use a separate PC on the same network, look for explicit LAN support for the exact Windows edition. If everyone will share one computer, check for local or shared-screen multiplayer. Online co-op is a third category: it can suit a group, but it may require an internet connection and does not prove that players can connect over a LAN.

  • For a confirmed LAN pick: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has Steam tags for LAN PvP and LAN co-op.
  • For same-PC play: prioritize games that explicitly describe local or shared-screen multiplayer for the edition you own.
  • For online co-op: check the game’s current requirements and account rules; a player count alone does not establish LAN support.

For most candidates below, the available category or editorial listings identify local-multiplayer or co-op potential, not LAN functionality. Check the current store listing and game documentation before planning a LAN-only session, and do not assume every player can play offline or without an account.

15 Windows games to consider

1. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition — confirmed LAN PvP and co-op

This real-time strategy game is the strongest fit for a literal LAN request: Steam labels its multiplayer modes LAN PvP and LAN co-op. Its campaigns, civilizations, and continuing updates make it a choice for groups who want a longer strategy session rather than quick party rounds. Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 11, and 15 GB storage among the minimum requirements, and also lists a broadband internet connection; the LAN labels are not a guarantee that every feature or setup works offline. 2. Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition — edition matters

Minecraft is a flexible candidate for building or survival sessions, but the label “Minecraft” is not enough to determine how a group connects. Java and Bedrock are distinct editions, and the Store category listing does not establish native LAN support for each edition or every multiplayer setup. Confirm that all players have compatible editions and that the mode you intend to use works on your network.

3. Stardew Valley — cooperative farm life

Stardew Valley suits groups looking for a slower shared-world session. PC Gamer describes support for up to eight players, but that player count does not itself verify native LAN play or tell you which connection method applies to a given edition. Confirm the current mode and player limit before organizing a group.

4. Valheim — co-op survival

Valheim is a survival-focused option for groups who want a shared world and longer-term progression. PC Gamer lists co-op for one to ten players; that editorial player-count description is not proof of native LAN support. Check the current Windows edition’s connection options before relying on a local network.

Rank #2
The Stronghold Collection - PC
  • Stronghold - The original, award-winning castle sim that takes players through medieval Britain as they lead strategic military and economic expansion, defend against invaders, and conquer enemy castles.
  • Stronghold 2 - The King, having fled after the defeat of his own armies, is now attempting to rule his country from a secret location. Powerful barons are jostling for what is fast becoming a disintegrating kingdom, and it is up to you to stem the tides of their ambition and unite the land again under the King.
  • Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold Crusader Extreme - Journey to distant Arabian lands and lead a determined group of Crusaders. Relive the historic Crusades in four campaigns as Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, the Sultan of Syria. Stronghold Crusader Extreme adds 20 new missions, new buildings and larger armies of 10,000 troops.
  • Stronghold Legends - Play as epic leaders throughout history, including King Arthur and the forces of Camelot, Siegfried and Dietrich in the German Ice Campaign, and Vlad Dracul and his evil forces in Transylvania.
  • ESRB T Teen for images of Blood and Violence

5. Among Us — compact social deduction

Among Us is a candidate for groups who want short rounds built around discussion and deduction. Microsoft includes it in its PC local-multiplayer category, but that category does not establish that the current Windows edition offers LAN play. Verify whether the mode and connection requirements fit your gathering.

6. Age of Empires IV — another strategy candidate

Age of Empires IV is a real-time strategy alternative to the confirmed LAN pick above. Microsoft lists it in the PC local-multiplayer category, but that listing is not edition-level evidence of native LAN support. Check the game’s current multiplayer modes before choosing it for a LAN-only event.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge — action for a group

This beat-’em-up is a natural candidate for cooperative action rather than competitive strategy. Its presence in Microsoft’s PC local-multiplayer category helps identify it as a local-play possibility, but does not confirm how many players can join on a Windows PC or whether it supports LAN. Verify both for the edition you plan to use.

8. Streets of Rage 4 — cooperative beat-’em-up

Streets of Rage 4 offers another action-oriented option to investigate for a group. Microsoft’s category listing signals local-multiplayer relevance, not confirmed native LAN functionality or a specific player limit for your setup.

9. Gang Beasts — physics-based party brawling

For a lighter, chaotic session, Gang Beasts is a local-multiplayer candidate listed by Microsoft for PC. Do not infer LAN support, player count, or account and internet requirements from that category label alone; check the current Windows listing for the mode you want.

10. ASTRONEER — shared exploration

ASTRONEER is a candidate for a cooperative exploration session. Microsoft includes it in its PC local-multiplayer category, but the listing does not settle whether the current Windows version supports native LAN connections. Verify its multiplayer method before making it the centerpiece of a LAN gathering.

Rank #4

11. Overcooked! 2 — cooperative kitchen chaos

Overcooked! 2 is a coordination-heavy party choice. PC Gamer describes local or online multiplayer for one to four players. Those modes and counts make it a useful local/co-op candidate, but do not establish that separate PCs can connect over a LAN.

12. Counter-Strike 2 — competitive shooter candidate

Counter-Strike 2 appears in community suggestions for LAN gatherings, which shows player interest rather than verified current LAN functionality. Confirm the current game’s supported multiplayer options and requirements before planning a local match.

13. Call of Duty: World at War — older-edition candidate

World at War is another community-suggested title, but that recommendation is anecdotal and does not establish current Windows availability, compatibility, or LAN support. It is especially important to verify the exact edition and setup before inviting players to rely on it.

14. Quake — specify the edition

“Quake” can refer to different releases, so a general series name does not identify the multiplayer modes of the version you own. Community suggestions are a lead, not proof of current Windows LAN support. Check the exact edition’s documentation and store listing.

15. Unreal Tournament 2004 — legacy option to verify

Unreal Tournament 2004 appears in community LAN recommendations, but that does not establish present-day access, compatibility, or connection steps. Treat it as a legacy candidate and confirm that your chosen Windows edition can be obtained and used by everyone in the group.

What is confirmed—and what still needs checking

The evidence distinguishes a directly tagged LAN game from a broader pool of local and co-op possibilities. Microsoft’s PC local-multiplayer category is a discovery aid, not a guarantee that every game listed can host a LAN match. PC Gamer’s player counts describe co-op options, not LAN capacity. Community recommendations likewise cannot verify a particular edition or its present-day requirements.

Before settling on any unconfirmed title, check these details for the exact Windows edition:

  • Does the game explicitly support LAN, or only shared-screen local play or internet-based multiplayer?
  • How many players can use the specific mode you plan to run?
  • Do all players need the same edition, account, game version, or an internet connection?
  • Does the host need to configure a server, firewall, or network settings?
  • Do every player’s PCs meet the current system and storage requirements?

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition performance notes

For this game specifically, Age of Empires Support says larger maps and higher populations put more strain on computers. If players encounter performance problems, the support guidance suggests using smaller maps or capping population at 200 per team. These are game-specific performance suggestions, not general LAN requirements. Age of Empires II optimization tips.

The same support material discusses a “Host as Dedicated Server” option and network troubleshooting for online multiplayer. Because Steam lists broadband internet among the game’s requirements and the support guidance does not establish that every LAN setup works without internet, check current LAN-specific instructions rather than assuming an offline match will work.
