1. Check whether your membership is active, cancelled, or expired
Sign in to Account Management and open the subscription section. Check the PlayStation Plus plan, its status, and the next payment date. Sony’s subscription support page links to guidance on managing subscriptions and checking payment dates.

If the membership is still active, confirm that automatic renewal is enabled and note the date Sony expects to charge you. If you cancelled and the membership has ended, you may need to subscribe again rather than renew the old plan. Use Sony’s official subscription flow and review the plan and payment frequency shown before confirming.
2. Check the payment method and billing details
If the charge failed, confirm that the saved payment method has not expired and that its billing address matches the details held by the issuer. For PS5 error WS-113947-5, Sony specifically recommends checking those details. If correcting them does not resolve that error, Sony says to try another payment method; if the problem may be temporary, wait 24 hours before trying again. These steps are specific to that PS5 error, not a diagnosis for every failed renewal. See Sony’s WS-113947-5 guidance.

3. Know what wallet funds and gift cards can—and cannot—do
PlayStation Store wallet funds are used first for Store purchases, and you can add funds with a valid payment method or a PlayStation Store gift card. But Sony warns that a payment method may still be required when buying a subscription with wallet funds. A gift card can add balance; it is not a guaranteed replacement for the payment method required by a subscription purchase. Check that the card is compatible with your account’s region and review Sony’s wallet funding guidance.
4. Check payment options and retry rules for your region
Accepted payment methods vary by account country or region. Sony’s US payment-method page applies to US Store purchases; do not assume its list applies to accounts elsewhere. Use the PlayStation Store support page for your account’s region, and manage payment details in Account Management or on your console.

Retry timing can also depend on regional terms. Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe’s UK terms dated March 2026 say it may retry a failed subscription payment over the next few days. If a retry succeeds, the next payment date stays on the schedule that would have applied had the first payment succeeded. This is a UK-terms detail, not a worldwide guarantee; see Sony’s UK PS Plus terms, section 18.11.

If the subscription status and payment details look right but renewal still fails, follow the instructions for the exact error code and contact PlayStation Support. Have the code or full error message available. Without the account region, subscription status, error details, and payment issuer’s response, there is no reliable way to identify a particular account’s cause.
