In Elden Ring, equip load determines whether your character has a light, normal (medium), or heavy roll—and whether they can dodge or jump at all. These thresholds are specific to Elden Ring, not a rule shared by every game. Your load category depends on equipped gear weight as a percentage of your maximum equipment load, not on the raw weight alone.

How equip load and weight ratio work

Your weight ratio compares the weight of your equipped gear with your maximum equipment load. The same gear can put two characters in different categories if their maximum loads differ. Bandai Namco describes the ratio as total equipped gear divided by total equipment load in its advanced stats guide.

Use the equipment or status information in-game to compare your current equipped weight with your maximum capacity. The resulting percentage determines your load category:

Weight ratio Category What it means
29.9% or below Light Light roll
30%–69.9% Normal (medium) Normal roll
70%–99.9% Heavy Heavy roll
100% or above Overloaded You cannot dodge or jump

These are the bands printed in Bandai Namco’s guide; the retrieved guide does not identify a game version or patch. If you are right at a boundary, use the category shown in-game rather than relying on rounded mental arithmetic.

Why you are fat rolling—and how to change it

If your character has a heavy roll, the displayed weight ratio is at least 70% and below 100%. To move into normal load, get below 70%; to reach light load, get to 29.9% or less. At 100% or higher, the character is overloaded and cannot dodge or jump.

  1. Check your current ratio. Compare equipped weight with maximum equipment load in the game’s equipment or status information.
  2. Choose the roll category you want. Use the official thresholds above; for example, a normal roll requires a ratio below 70% and at least 30% under the guide’s printed bands.
  3. Reduce equipped weight if needed. Reconsider which armaments, armor, and talismans you have equipped, then check the ratio again.
  4. Alternatively, raise maximum capacity. Endurance increases equipment load, and some talismans boost it. Recheck the ratio after changing capacity.

Bandai Namco’s stats guide explains that Endurance determines both stamina and total equipment load—the maximum allowance for equipped armaments, armor, and talismans (stats guide).

Roll speed versus armor defense

Light rolls travel farther and recover faster than heavy rolls, according to Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guide. Its combat guide also says armor categories become more defensive as their weight increases, while recommending that players retain at least a medium roll (combat guide).

That makes equip load a tradeoff: heavier armor can provide more defense, but it uses more of your capacity and may push you into a slower roll category. The guides do not identify one best armor set or roll category for every build. Compare the defensive benefit with the mobility you want, rather than assuming that the lightest possible equipment is always the right choice.

Ways to increase equipment capacity

Invest in Endurance

Endurance raises maximum equipment load as well as stamina. Increasing it can make a given load a smaller percentage of your capacity, but attribute points also matter to the rest of your character build. The official guide establishes the stat’s effects, but does not prescribe a specific Endurance target for a particular loadout.

Use equipment-load talismans

Load-boosting talismans can increase capacity without changing equipped gear weight. Bandai Namco’s guide gives an example of a character with 34 Endurance and two such talismans at a 69.2% ratio. That is an example of one setup reaching normal load, not a universal target or recommendation for every build.
