Try another game you know is stable and note whether it also crashes. 4. Test a different Proton selection
In Steam, open Elin’s Properties, go to Compatibility, and enable the option to force a compatibility tool. Try the latest Proton version Steam offers, then retest before changing anything else. Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version when troubleshooting an individual Steam app. If that does not help, you can compare another available Proton option, returning to the original selection if results worsen. Record whether Elin launches, whether the same save or location reproduces the crash, and whether changing only the Proton selection changes the result. Community posts from November and December 2024 report running Elin with Proton Experimental and Proton GE, but these are individual reports—not controlled comparisons or evidence that either is a universal crash fix. 5. Lower graphics settings if it crashes during play
If Elin launches but crashes after gameplay begins, reduce its graphics settings and test again. Valve includes lowering graphics settings among its general app troubleshooting suggestions. 7. Escalate with useful details
If the crash continues, note whether it happens at launch or during play, whether other games are affected, what Proton option you tested, and whether the same situation reproduces it. Contact Steam Support or Elin’s developer with those details; Valve recommends Steam Support if its general stability checks do not resolve a Steam Deck problem. What Elin’s Steam Deck status does—and doesn’t—tell you
Elin, developed and published by Lafrontier, entered Early Access on 1 November 2024 and is described on Steam as a successor to Elona. Elin on Steam SteamDB’s listed Playable status and SteamOS record are encouraging signs of compatibility, but its test date and listed caveats matter: neither that record nor the community reports establish that a particular Proton version prevents crashes on a current build. Use the status as context, not as a crash diagnosis.

Avoid risky fixes without a clear reason
Do not delete saves or Proton data, change BIOS settings, cap power, or install unofficial system tools based only on a general crash. The cited guidance does not establish those actions as safe or relevant Elin fixes.
