How Do You Use Bones on an Altar? A Quick, Tradition-Sensitive Guide

Bones on an altar may be relics, symbols, offerings, or personal objects. Their use depends on tradition, meaning, how they were obtained, and local rules.

There is no universal way to use bones on an altar. First decide whether the object is meant as a symbol, memorial, relic, offering, or decoration; if you follow a particular tradition, use guidance from its knowledgeable community. If the bone was found outdoors, avoid handling it directly and check local rules before keeping it.

What does “bones on an altar” mean?

The phrase can describe very different things: sacred remains displayed in a reliquary, animal remains left by an ancient rite, bone imagery, or a personal ritual object. Those examples are not interchangeable, and historical practices do not establish a rule for what to do today.

  • Relic: remains treated as sacred within a particular religious tradition.
  • Offering or archaeological deposit: remains associated with a past ritual context, which archaeologists interpret from evidence at a specific site.
  • Symbol or decoration: an image or object used to represent an idea, without necessarily being a relic or offering.
  • Personal ritual object: an item whose meaning depends on the practitioner and, where relevant, their community’s guidance.

How to decide what to do

  1. Name the purpose. Decide whether you intend the bone to represent something, commemorate someone, serve as an offering, or simply be displayed. Do not assume these roles mean the same thing.
  2. Follow the relevant tradition. If this is part of a religious or community practice, ask a knowledgeable authority within that tradition. There is no single contemporary checklist established across traditions.
  3. Check the source and status of the object. Consider whether it is animal or human, whether it is a relic or ordinary remains, and how it was obtained. Do not treat historical examples as permission to acquire or use remains.
  4. Check safety and local law before keeping it. If it is a found wild-animal bone, avoid direct contact and verify the rules that apply to the species and your location.

What historical examples do—and do not—show

Christian relic display

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes a South Netherlandish arm reliquary dated about 1230. Its windows allowed bones inside to be seen when the container was placed on an altar. This is a specific example of Christian devotional display, not general advice for altar use. The Met’s object record provides details about the reliquary.

The British Museum recounts that in 1220 Thomas Becket’s remains were moved from his tomb to a jeweled casket in a chapel behind Canterbury Cathedral’s high altar. That was the translation and veneration of a saint’s remains in a particular historical setting, not casual altar decoration. The British Museum’s account describes the event.

Animal bones at an ancient altar

At Mt. Lykaion, Penn Museum reporting describes burnt animal bones and deposits associated with an ancient ash altar. One reported feature contained mostly sheep and goat bones, primarily patellas, femurs, and tail bones; the report says roughly 98% of the bones in that assemblage were burnt. These figures describe that site and report, not altars generally. Penn Museum’s Expedition account gives the site-specific context.

Bone imagery is not the same as using bones

Mexico’s INAH describes an altar at Tenayuca decorated with skull and crossed-bone imagery, interpreting it in relation to death and expired cycles of time. Images carved on an altar do not establish how a person should use actual remains. INAH’s account explains its interpretation.

If you found a bone outdoors

Do not pick it up just because it seems suitable for an altar. Ontario’s guidance on dead wildlife recommends avoiding direct contact; when handling is necessary, it advises using protective equipment as appropriate, keeping children and pets away, washing hands, and cleaning equipment and hard surfaces afterward. This is public-safety guidance, not a method for preparing or consecrating bones. See Ontario’s dead-wildlife advice.

Collection and possession rules vary by jurisdiction and species. UK guidance, for example, explains that bones from certain protected species may fall under wildlife-trade controls. Check the law where you are before collecting, buying, keeping, or transporting a specimen; UK CITES guidance illustrates why species and location matter.

If the remains are human

Human remains raise distinct ethical, legal, religious, and conservation concerns. UK museum guidance emphasizes consultation, clean and dry storage, minimum intervention, and qualified conservation oversight—not casual private use. The Vatican’s instruction describes formal church-authority processes for relics. Neither source endorses private acquisition or informal altar use. See Museums Galleries Scotland’s guidance and the Vatican instruction on relics.

U.S. CDC guidance about importing clean, dry bones concerns border controls; it does not grant general permission to possess or use them. Consult the relevant rules for your location and situation. CDC import guidance is limited to that context.
