Battlefield 2042 players did report PC crashes and freezes around Update 2.2, but the official patch notes do not identify a widespread crash or freeze regression caused by the update. The reports varied, and some players said their problems started before the patch. Update 2.2 is also a historical release—not the game’s latest update today.
What happened after Battlefield 2042 Update 2.2?
EA announced Update 2.2.0 for October 20, 2022 at 08:00 UTC. Its official update notes do not list a broad PC crash or freeze issue. The freeze-related fix they do mention was specific: vehicles could freeze for a few seconds when a player switched seats on a moving platform.
Players described PC freezes during loading and matches in an EA Forums thread. Some said audio continued after the image froze, leaving them to force-close the game. Other posts said the freezing had begun before the October 20 update. Those accounts document player experiences and timing; they do not establish that v2.2 caused every reported crash or freeze.
Did DICE confirm a fix?
In the same historical thread, DICE Team representative EA_Atic wrote: “We are seeing positive signs that the reported scenarios of freezing for PC players have now been resolved.” The representative said the issue was classed as closed while inviting players to report continued freezes. That update describes the staff assessment at the time; it does not guarantee every PC configuration was fixed or rule out similar problems later.

What to do if Battlefield 2042 still crashes or freezes
Start by identifying where the failure occurs and whether it affects only the game or the whole system. The distinction helps you follow the relevant platform guidance instead of applying an unrelated workaround.
- Note the platform and failure stage. Record whether you play on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox and whether the game hangs at launch, during map loading, or in a match.
- Check whether the problem is game-only. If Battlefield 2042 becomes unresponsive but the rest of the system remains usable, note that. If the entire PC or console locks up or reboots, record that separately.
- Use EA’s current support hub. The Battlefield 2042 support page links to general crash and freeze troubleshooting for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. It also links to DxDiag guidance for PC.
- On PC, try the overlay check as a diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix. A DICE Team representative suggested disabling the EA app or Origin overlay in the historical forum thread. Player responses there were mixed, including reports of freezing while overlays were already disabled. If you try it, note whether the symptom changes.
- Report persistent symptoms through EA support. Include your platform, when the freeze occurs, whether audio continues, and whether the whole system is affected. These details distinguish the different scenarios described in the historical reports.
What the historical reports do not establish
The forum posts are individual player reports, not a verified count of affected players or proof of a single root cause. EA’s cited patch notes and support information do not establish that driver rollbacks, disabling Windows security, buying new hardware, or using a repair tool are effective or safe general fixes for this issue.

EA’s support hub lists later update news, so v2.2 should not be treated as Battlefield 2042’s current latest version. The reports and DICE response discussed here concern the October 2022 release period.
