Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said the Borderlands 4 teaser contained several secrets, including some fans had not yet discussed. The visible clues have sparked theories about a moon, a mysterious face and alien-looking glyphs—but the report confirms few answers, and the proposed glyph translation remains fan speculation.
What Randy Pitchford said about the teaser
After the teaser debuted during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, fans began examining it frame by frame. On August 21, 2024, Pitchford posted: “There are several secrets in the teaser for Borderlands 4. Some I have not seen commented on yet. What have you found!” The statement invited viewers to keep looking; it did not provide a definitive key to the trailer’s imagery. PC Gamer reported Pitchford’s post and the fan theories.

What viewers noticed—and what it might mean
The moon and the apparent impact
A moon appears through a fiery effect, with a brief streak or impact visible on its surface. PC Gamer identified the moon as likely Elpis, but the report does not document a developer confirmation of that identification. Fan @Primidian drew attention to the object that seems to approach and strike it. The possibility that the object is Lilith is conjecture, not an established explanation.
The face over the Vault symbol
Near the end, a quick sequence shows an orange face over a Vault symbol before the glyphs appear. Some fans guessed the face was Handsome Jack. Pitchford reportedly rejected that identification, saying the figure was “something far more dangerous and sinister.” The report does not name the figure, so its identity remains unresolved there.

The closing glyphs
Reddit user pskought proposed that the alien-looking glyphs translate as “HE IS WATCHING” and “BREAK FREE.” That is a fan reading, not a confirmed translation. The suggested link between “He is watching” and The Watcher is likewise speculative; the report does not establish either the cipher or the lore connection as official.
Other images without confirmed meanings
The teaser also includes a cloaked planet and a robotic arm taking a bandit mask from a crater. PC Gamer mentions these images but does not establish what they mean. Treat them as details to watch, not solved clues.

- Confirmed in Pitchford’s reported statement: he said the teaser had several secrets and that some had not yet been commented on.
- Reported correction: Pitchford said the face was not Handsome Jack, describing it instead as “something far more dangerous and sinister.” The report gives no identity.
- Unconfirmed interpretations: Elpis as the moon, Lilith as the apparent impact, the glyph translation, and a connection to The Watcher are not presented as verified explanations.
- Unresolved imagery: the cloaked planet and the robotic arm with the bandit mask are described without a settled meaning.
