In Forspoken, the best beginner combat habit is to keep moving and switch between offensive and support magic instead of leaning on one spell set. Frey’s magical parkour is useful in fights as well as for crossing Athia, and the game offers a setting that can pause combat while you change magic types.
How to balance offensive and support magic
Frey has separate offensive and support magic selections. The beginner guide from Touch, Tap, Play, published January 27, 2023, recommends rotating between them: offensive magic does not deplete, and attacking can help speed support-magic cooldowns. Use support spells for their defensive or utility role, then return to offensive spells while support magic recovers.

On PlayStation-style controls, select support magic with L1 and cast it with L2; select offensive magic with R1 and cast it with R2. When the surge meter is full, press L2 and R2 together to unleash a surge attack. Controls may differ with another control scheme, so check the in-game settings if these inputs do not match your setup.
Move with magical parkour during fights
Magical parkour is more than a way to travel around Athia. Use it to reposition when enemies close in, create space, and avoid standing still while you choose a spell or wait for a cooldown. Treat movement as part of your combat rhythm: evade and reposition, attack, then use support magic when its effect is useful.

Make switching magic easier under pressure
If changing magic types during a hectic fight is difficult, enable the setting that stops time while you switch. It gives you a moment to choose a different set without having to make the selection while combat continues. This is an available option, not a requirement; keep real-time switching if you prefer its pace.
Practice spells with Spellcrafting Challenges
Spellcrafting Challenges provide structured goals for practicing particular spells and abilities, and completing them can upgrade the associated spells. To start one, visit a Pilgrim’s Refuge and interact with its bookshelf.
