If Forza Horizon 5 keeps closing on your PC, start by recording exactly when it crashes, then work through the checks below one at a time—from updates and compatibility to overlays, file repair, and support. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: the goal is to identify what changes the result without introducing extra risk.
First, narrow down what kind of crash you have
Note whether FH5 closes before the splash screen, during loading or optimization, after the main menu appears, or during a race. Record the exact error text and whether the same failure happens on every attempt. A repeatable symptom and its wording are more useful than trying several unrelated tweaks at once.
Check your PC against the specifications on the Steam listing, retrieved October 8, 2026. These are published requirements, not a guarantee that a system meeting them will run without crashes.

If a component falls below a listed minimum, that is a compatibility concern to investigate—not proof that it caused this particular crash. Do not buy hardware based on a game crash alone.

Try these 18 checks in order
Make one change, test the same crash scenario, and note the result before moving to the next step. The first checks are low-risk; later ones take more time or involve more system variables. Several are general diagnostic tests rather than FH5-specific fixes confirmed by Forza.

1. Record the crash pattern
Write down the stage at which the game closes, the exact error message if there is one, and whether the crash happens on every attempt. Keep the test conditions consistent—for example, use the same route from launching the game to reaching the point where it fails.

2. Check for an FH5 update
Look for updates in the store or launcher where you installed the game: Steam or Microsoft Store/Xbox app. A historical example shows why the exact message matters: an official Forza Community Forums post dated June 5, 2025, records a PC/Steam hotfix for a crash following an “Invalid Profile” message. It lists PC version 3.685.421.0 and Steam version 1.685.421.0. That fix addressed that specific issue at that time; it is not evidence that the old hotfix resolves unrelated crashes or is the current build.

3. Restart Windows after an update
After installing a game or system update, restart the PC before testing again. The June 2025 Forza hotfix post specifically advised restarting after installation. A restart is a simple way to ensure an update has taken effect, not a standalone diagnosis.

4. Compare your PC with the published requirements
Check your Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics card, DirectX support, and available storage against the Steam listing above. Use your PC’s system information and graphics settings to identify the components rather than relying on a computer’s marketing name alone.

5. Check free space on both relevant drives
The Steam listing specifies 110 GB of available storage. Check the drive where FH5 is installed and the Windows drive before downloading a large update or reinstalling. The listing’s storage figure is a requirement; checking both drives is a precaution against running short of space during installation or system activity.

6. Install pending Windows updates, then restart
Check Windows Update for pending updates and restart if you install any. A pinned Steam Community troubleshooting post, edited October 6, 2023, recommends keeping Windows updated and restarting. Treat this as dated community guidance and a basic diagnostic check, not a current Forza-confirmed cure.

7. Check your graphics driver
Record the installed GPU driver version, then check for a driver update from the maker of your graphics card. If the crashes began immediately after a driver change, note that timing rather than assuming the newest driver is necessarily responsible. Forza’s 2025 PC hotfix thread asks players reporting continued crashes to provide GPU driver details; it does not identify a universal driver version to install.

8. See whether other demanding apps are stable
Try another graphics-heavy game or application you already use. If several apps also crash, freeze, or show graphical errors, investigate broader PC stability rather than treating FH5 as the only possible cause. This comparison helps narrow the problem; it does not establish a particular hardware fault.

9. Temporarily close overlays and monitoring utilities
For one test, close one optional overlay or monitoring utility, then try the same reproducible scenario. If the result is unchanged, restore it before testing another. The official material available for this topic does not establish a current list of incompatible utilities, so treat this strictly as an isolation test; do not uninstall tools wholesale.

10. Test with nonessential background apps closed
Close nonessential apps for one controlled launch and test. Avoid changing multiple startup or system settings at once, and do not broadly disable security protections. If closing background apps makes no difference, reopen them and continue.

11. Review security software’s block history
Check your security software’s quarantine or protection history for a specific FH5 file or executable that it blocked. Do not add an exception just because the game crashes. If you find a recorded block, use only a narrow, reversible exception for the identified item, test, and restore the prior setting if it does not resolve the issue. The sources cited here do not establish antivirus software as a general cause of FH5 crashes.

12. Use the launcher’s repair or file verification option
If your launcher offers a built-in repair or file-verification feature, run it and let it finish before retesting. The exact label and location can vary by launcher version, so use the option provided by your installation’s store or app. This is a software-integrity check; do not delete saved-game data as part of it.

13. Confirm the expected account and launcher
Make sure the store or launcher is signed into the account that owns the game. If FH5 displays a profile or account error, capture its exact wording and check for an update before changing other settings. The June 5, 2025 hotfix is relevant only if the failure matches its “Invalid Profile” crash context.

14. Test default tuning if you changed clock settings
If you intentionally overclocked or undervolted the CPU or GPU, record your current values and temporarily return only those settings to their defaults. Test FH5, then restore your original configuration if the crash is unchanged. This is a controlled stability test, not a confirmed universal FH5 remedy.

15. Watch for broader stability or temperature symptoms
During a normal play attempt, note whether the PC reports a thermal warning, shuts down, or has problems in other applications. Those symptoms call for broader system-stability investigation. A game crash by itself does not show that a component needs replacing.

16. Reinstall only after less disruptive checks
Before uninstalling, confirm which account owns the game and understand the save or cloud-save status for your installation. A reinstall costs time and bandwidth, and the official sources cited here do not establish it as a first-line fix. If you proceed, reinstall from the same store or launcher and test before making other changes.

17. Look for the exact symptom in Forza’s Troubleshooting Hub
Turn 10 describes the Troubleshooting Hub as a place to surface issues, workarounds, and status. Search for your exact error or a closely matching crash sequence. An unrelated player report is not proof that your PC has the same cause.

18. Send a report to Forza Support if it still crashes
Turn 10 directs players to Forza Support for crashes and other game issues. Include the store or platform you use, FH5 version, Windows build, GPU and driver version, exact error text, the stage at which the crash occurs, and the steps you have already tried. Say whether the crash reproduces consistently and identify the last change, if any, that affected it. The official June 2025 hotfix thread also asks players whose crashes continue to submit details to support.
Why does Forza Horizon 5 keep crashing on my PC?
A crash can have more than one plausible area to investigate: compatibility, a game or Windows update, graphics drivers, background software, file integrity, account or profile errors, or broader PC stability. The available sources do not establish a measured leading cause or a fix-success rate, so it would be misleading to diagnose an unspecified crash from the symptom alone. The crash stage, error text, and whether another controlled change affects the result help distinguish possibilities.

Turn 10’s February 21, 2023 guidance says players should continue reporting crashes and other issues through Forza Support, with the Troubleshooting Hub used to follow issues, workarounds, and status. The official June 5, 2025 forum post documents a version-specific correction for the “Invalid Profile” crash and recommends restarting after installing that hotfix. Neither source says that one remedy applies to every PC crash. The general Forza PC crash guide was found, but redirected to an inaccessible support domain; no additional detailed steps from that page are treated here as verified guidance.
