For most people, start with Azahar. It is the actively developed, free, open-source 3DS emulator recommended for current Android and PC users. RetroArch’s Citra core makes sense if you already use RetroArch; Panda3DS is an experimental alternative. There aren’t ten distinct, comparably maintained choices supported by the current evidence, so this guide focuses on the real options rather than padding a top-ten list.
Which Nintendo 3DS emulator should you install?
| Option | Maintenance and maturity | Platforms | Setup | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azahar | Actively developed; based on Citra and continues its legacy. Compatibility still varies by game. | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android | Standalone app | Most Android and PC users |
| RetroArch with the Citra core | The Citra core is no longer actively developed, according to a January 2026 comparison. | RetroArch-supported platforms; check the current official core catalog for availability | Install or load a core, then configure games in RetroArch | Existing RetroArch users who want a multi-system frontend |
| Panda3DS | Less mature; the January 2026 comparison reports limited compatibility, glitches, and games that fail to load. | Check the project’s current site for supported builds and platforms | Standalone project | People willing to experiment rather than prioritize compatibility |
Azahar describes itself as a free, open-source 3DS emulator for PC and mobile, developed by community contributors. It is based on Citra and aims to add options such as higher resolutions, modern controllers, and save states. Its project repository says it “continues the legacy of Citra” and is actively developed; it also states that Azahar is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. Azahar project repository.

Will Azahar run on your device?
Check the project’s listed requirements before installing. Meeting them does not guarantee that every game will run well: results also depend on the device’s hardware, graphics drivers, emulator version, and the particular title.
- Windows: Windows 10, 64-bit.
- macOS: macOS 13.4 or later.
- Linux: modern 64-bit Linux.
- Android: Android 10 or later on a 64-bit device; Snapdragon 835 or better.
- Desktop graphics: OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan 1.1 support.
- Android graphics: OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1 support.
- Memory: 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended.
These are the requirements published by Azahar; consult its official repository for current installation guidance and release details. Compatibility is title-specific. Citra’s archived FAQ warns that some games need individual workarounds, while Azahar maintains a process for reporting compatibility. Check reports for the game you want rather than assuming a broad compatibility claim applies to it. Archived Citra FAQ; Azahar project repository.

How to choose among the current options
Choose Azahar for a straightforward standalone app
Azahar is the sensible starting point if you want a dedicated emulator on Android or desktop. Android users can find it on Google Play or use the project’s Vanilla build. Azahar says Vanilla offers faster file management but cannot be distributed through Google Play; it recommends the Play Store for most users for accessibility. APK installations do not receive automatic updates, so users who install that way need to check for updates themselves. Confirm current release instructions with the project before downloading.
Choose RetroArch only if its frontend is useful to you
RetroArch can put several systems in one interface, but its Citra core is not the best default for someone seeking the most actively maintained 3DS option. Setup involves obtaining or loading the core and configuring the game. Check RetroArch’s official documentation and core catalog for current availability; the January 2026 comparison describes the Citra core as no longer actively developed. Try Panda3DS if experimentation matters more than reliability
Panda3DS is a distinct emulator project, not another name for Citra or Azahar. Its official project site is panda3ds.com. The January 2026 comparison describes it as early and limited in compatibility, including glitches and titles that do not load. That makes it an option to explore, not the safer first choice for a game you expect to play reliably. Android Authority’s January 2026 comparison.
Why Citra and Lime3DS are not separate top recommendations
Citra matters as the foundation and lineage behind today’s options, but its site labels its documentation as an archive dated March 4, 2024. Azahar’s Google Play description says it continues Citra’s legacy; a January 2026 comparison describes Azahar as a merger of Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s Citra fork and says it replaced Lime3DS on Google Play. That makes Azahar the more useful current recommendation than treating older projects, forks, and frontends as equivalent active choices. Emulators do not include 3DS games
Azahar ships without games. Its Google Play description says the developers do not condone piracy and asks users to learn how to obtain legal private copies of their library under local laws. Some titles may also require files dumped from a 3DS, according to Citra’s archived compatibility page. Copyright and circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction, and these sources do not determine what is lawful for an individual reader. Do not assume that installing an emulator supplies game files or makes every method of obtaining them legal. Azahar on Google Play; Archived Citra compatibility page.
