The useful answer depends on what you play: boss encounters, auctions, Mythic+, collecting, or everyday interface management. These eight picks cover distinct jobs rather than forming a must-install checklist. Midnight changed how some addon features work, so check each project’s current game-version compatibility before installing.
How to choose WoW addons after Midnight
Midnight did not remove every addon, but some addon functions changed under its rules. Wowhead’s guide, updated August 10, 2026 for patch 12.1.0, lists current addon categories and options, including boss mods and nameplates. Compatibility is version-specific and can change as projects update; check the supported game version and update date on the CurseForge WoW addon directory before downloading.
The recommendations below are based on the jobs their current listings describe, not on an objective performance ranking or personal testing. Pick only what supports the activities you play.
Eight WoW addons worth considering
1. BigWigs — encounter cues with a modular approach
BigWigs provides boss warnings, countdown timers, and audio alerts. Its modular approach may suit players who want an encounter tool organized around the content they use. CurseForge lists it for Retail, with a project update dated October 7, 2026. See the BigWigs project listing for current compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- 600 questions with varying degrees of difficulty
- Custom designed box top art
- Custom Baby Murloc movers
2. Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) — explicit warnings for dungeons and raids
DBM is an encounter companion for dungeons, raids, and events. Its listing describes visual warnings, audio cues, and countdown timers. CurseForge shows a current Retail dungeon module; check the project’s supported version and modules for the content you play. See Deadly Boss Mods on CurseForge.
BigWigs and DBM cover overlapping ground, so most players should compare them rather than install both by default. Consider warning style, setup, supported client version, and the content you play. Available sources do not establish an objective winner.

Install selectively and check compatibility
- Open the addon’s project page in the CurseForge WoW addon directory.
- Confirm that the listing supports your WoW client version and review its latest update date.
- Install through your chosen addon manager or the installation method provided by the project, then launch WoW and check that the addon is enabled for the intended character.
- Test it in the activity you chose it for. If an addon or feature behaves unexpectedly after a game update, check the project page for a compatible update and review the addon’s settings before adding another tool that overlaps.
For Midnight-era context, Wowhead’s guide was updated August 10, 2026 and organizes options under the changed restrictions; its categories include DBM, BigWigs, and Plater. A January 22, 2026 PC Gamer interview quoted WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas saying, “We’ve probably let this go farther than we should have.” That statement reflects the wider addon ecosystem, not a guarantee about any specific addon’s present functionality. Do not assume that every feature—or every WeakAuras import—has the same status; check the current project and feature details.
