Beat Saber suits friends who want rhythm competition. Walkabout Mini Golf suits groups who want a relaxed, talk-while-you-play social sport. Open-ended social spaces such as VRChat, Gorilla Tag, and Rec Room are popular, but this guide does not verify their current Quest 2 features, so treat them as leads to check rather than confirmed picks.
Pick a game by the session you want
The three session types below separate cleanly, and each has a different answer for group size, pace, and cost.

Check the basics before you buy
Store details change, and multiplayer is the part of a listing most likely to be out of date. Run through these checks on the game’s page in the Meta Horizon Store before you buy or invite anyone.
- Confirm that the listing names Meta Quest 2 as a supported device. Both games covered in detail here do so in the listings checked for this guide.
- Read the multiplayer line in the description. Beat Saber’s listing says: “Online: Challenge friends or join up to 5-player cross-play matches.” Walkabout’s listing describes online quick matches and private rooms for up to eight players.
- Check whether the friends you want to play with are on a platform the listing supports. Cross-play is advertised for both games, but the listing summaries used here do not spell out every platform or mode restriction.
- Look for paid add-ons. Beat Saber sells music packs, and Walkabout sells course DLC. Both are optional, but a group that wants everything may need to buy them separately.
- Confirm the price in your own regional store. The Beat Saber listing consulted for this guide showed $19.99, but regional pricing and promotions vary.
Beat Saber: competitive rhythm sessions
Beat Saber fits friends who enjoy short, score-driven rounds. Its listing describes it as a rhythm action title and lists both single-user and multiplayer modes. The headline multiplayer detail is the match limit: the listing advertises up to five players in cross-play matches, so it works well for a small group rather than a crowd. The listing does not state whether private rooms are available, so if you need a closed lobby for a specific group, confirm that before you buy.

Paid music packs are the recurring cost to watch. Because they are optional, a group can agree on which packs to buy so that everyone can play the same songs.
Walkabout Mini Golf: relaxed social play
Walkabout Mini Golf is the better choice when the goal is conversation and low pressure. Its listing covers solo play, one-on-one online quick matches, and private rooms for up to eight players, which makes it more practical for larger groups than Beat Saber’s five-player cap. Pace is the main trade-off: a round of mini golf moves slower than a rhythm match, so it suits groups who want to chat between shots.

The course library has two layers. The listing describes 14 base courses and paid DLC courses. Its Guest Pass feature lets a guest play a host’s paid DLC course without owning that course, which keeps costs down for a group if one player buys the expansion. The Guest Pass works when the host owns the course, so it is not a way to unlock content nobody in the room has bought. Course counts and DLC prices are store details that can change.
Open-ended social spaces: what is and is not established
Meta’s Horizon OS developer blog, dated February 24, 2026, names VRChat, Gorilla Tag, and Rec Room as apps that stand out across app usage metrics. The exact wording is: “A few titles standing out as overall winners across gamer types: VR Chat, Gorilla Tag, and Rec Room all tend to emerge as top apps across app usage metrics.” The article gives no usage figures, so it supports the claim that these apps are prominent on the platform, not a ranking of which one is best.

That article also does not establish current Quest 2 support or the multiplayer features of each app. For these three, check the live Meta Store listing for device compatibility, supported modes, and player limits before recommending them to a group. Their popularity is a reason to look, not proof that they will suit your session.
Why a friend’s game may not connect
Meta’s developer guidance says multiplayer services are supported only between users whose apps have the same SDK version integrated. The guidance illustrates this with a historical case: builds using different integrated SDK versions did not support multiplayer between Quest 1 build v50 and Quest 2 build v51. That example concerns specific builds and should not be read as a current rule that Quest 2 players cannot join each other. If a friend cannot find or join your session, the first check is that both of you have the current version of the same game installed.

Meta’s multiplayer overview describes multiplayer as users sharing a goal in synchronous, asynchronous, or co-located play, with connection features such as invites, rejoin, and rosters. This is platform documentation, so whether a particular game offers invites or rejoin is a per-game question.

If your group is three to five people who want to compete over scores, Beat Saber fits. If your group is larger, wants a private room, or prefers a slower game that doubles as conversation, Walkabout Mini Golf is the better match. For open-ended spaces, verify each app’s current listing before you commit.
