Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Troop Trees: Factions, Classes, and Mercenaries

Use Bannerlord troop trees to trace units from entry branches to advanced roles across six factions, then consult the separate mercenary tree. Check game versions before relying on stats or balance comparisons.

Bannerlord troop trees are progression maps: start with a recruit or other entry unit, then follow its branch toward the role and advanced unit you want. The main faction overview covers Aserai, Battania, Empire, Khuzait, Sturgia, and Vlandia; mercenaries have a separate tree. Use faction, class, tier, and branch as a starting point for finding and comparing troops—not as a current-patch ranking.

How to read a Bannerlord troop tree

Each tree shows how an entry unit can advance into later units. Follow the branch from its starting troop to identify the path toward a desired role or named unit. A tree is useful for orientation and progression; it does not, by itself, establish which unit performs best in combat.

For a first comparison, note four things: the troop’s faction, class or battlefield role, tier, and the branch required to reach it. Gamer Guides’ overview groups the main faction options into infantry, ranged, and cavalry, and describes its lists as covering tiers 1–5. Gamer Guides’ faction troop overview is one way to scan those categories.

Main faction troop trees

The six main faction trees covered in the overview are:

The Mount & Blade Wiki’s troop-tree reference provides named branches, including an Aserai example that runs through recruit, infantry, and ranged branches, as well as Mamluke troops and Faris cavalry. Treat that example as a map for locating a progression, not a guarantee that every displayed branch matches every game version. See the Mount & Blade Wiki troop trees reference.

Troop classes and faction categories

Class labels help narrow a tree to the kind of unit you are looking for. Infantry, ranged troops, and cavalry are useful broad categories; the wiki’s Bannerlord troop category also groups units by faction and class, including cavalry and horse archers. Browse the Bannerlord Troops category for those groupings.

Use class as an initial filter rather than a complete description of battlefield behavior. A category tells you how a reference organizes a troop, but does not establish detailed equipment, upgrade requirements, or relative effectiveness for a particular patch.

Mercenary troop trees are separate

Check mercenaries separately from the six main faction trees. The wiki presents them as their own branch structure, including sellsword and sword sister lines. Named examples include Hired Crossbow, Mercenary Horseman, Mercenary Cavalry, and Gallant Sword Sister. See the mercenary troop-tree reference.

How to compare units without mixing game versions

Troop names and branch layouts help locate options, but they are not enough to support a precise combat verdict. The cited tree and overview references do not establish a single shared current patch for all of their listed data. BannerlordDB describes its encyclopedia as drawing troop statistics and related information from game files and shows Native and Sandbox module labels, but the surfaced reference does not state a patch number. Consult the BannerlordDB encyclopedia as a data reference, and verify that its module and data version fit the game you are playing.

  • For a broad search, identify the faction and class first.
  • Use the tree to trace the branch from entry troop to the unit of interest.
  • Use tier as a category for locating options, not as proof that one troop is stronger than another.
  • Before comparing combat stats, equipment, or upgrade requirements, check the exact game version and confirm the data applies to it.
