TRON: Identity is a short, narrative-led detective visual novel—not an action game. You play Query, investigating a break-in and disappearance in a Grid that has evolved without User intervention. Reviews split largely on what players want from that premise: the game’s TRON atmosphere and branching story appeal to some critics, while others find its brief visual-novel format too slight.
What kind of game is TRON: Identity?
Developed and published by Bithell Games, TRON: Identity launched on April 11, 2023. Its story follows Query, a detective program investigating a break-in at the Repository, where an important artifact has disappeared. The setting is a Grid left to develop without User intervention, giving the mystery room to explore a corner of the TRON universe beyond the familiar films. Steam’s listing and Nintendo’s Switch listing describe it as a visual-novel adventure.

The official descriptions emphasize narrative choices and Identity Disc puzzles, not sustained action combat. Nintendo also highlights hand-crafted character art. D23’s launch announcement mentions light-cycles, but that source does not establish how much playtime those sequences occupy, so they should not be taken as evidence that the game plays like a conventional action-heavy TRON title. D23’s announcement also identifies PC and Nintendo Switch as the announced platforms; store availability can vary by region and over time.
What do reviews say about TRON: Identity?
The review picture is mixed, and the disagreement is more useful than any single score: reviewers differ on whether a compact, choice-driven mystery is enough to carry the TRON setting.

| Review measure | What it showed | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic critic score | 67 Metascore from 14 critic reviews; categorized as “Mixed or Average” in the retrieved listing. | A middling aggregate, not a universal verdict or a substitute for individual reviews. |
| Metacritic user score | 3.8 from 4 user ratings in the retrieved listing. | Four ratings are too few to represent players broadly. |
| Steam user-review sentiment | Separate retrieved results showed 79% positive from 274 reviews and 80% positive from 275 reviews. | The snapshots conflict and user-review counts change. Check the live store page for current figures rather than treating either number as current. |
Metacritic’s listing places the critics’ result in the mixed range. Its excerpts illustrate the split: IGN’s April 25, 2023 listing excerpt calls the short detective story worth playing and replaying, while The Guardian’s April 21, 2023 excerpt praises its atmosphere and flexible story but finds the remaining visual novel fleeting and unremarkable. Those are examples of different critical responses, not proof that all reviews share either view.
On Steam, a Digital Trends excerpt shown with a 4/5 rating calls the game “a smart and respectful use of the classic series, turning it into a gripping sci-fi detective story.” The excerpt is attributed to the publication; the reviewer’s name was not available in the listing material. Steam’s listing also reproduces critic excerpts, but those snippets should not be mistaken for full reviews.

How long is TRON: Identity?
Expect a short experience rather than a long adventure. GameSpot’s review says the full story can be completed in less time than it takes to watch any of the TRON movies. That is the reviewer’s comparison, not a measured or guaranteed playtime; no exact completion time is established here. GameSpot’s review makes length a clear value consideration for players deciding whether a brief narrative game suits them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is TRON: Identity worth playing?
It is a better fit if you want a compact mystery, branching narrative choices, Identity Disc puzzles, and a fresh story in the TRON setting. The favorable review case is that the world and detective premise make a short visual novel engaging enough to revisit. The critical case is that atmosphere and flexible story may not compensate if you expect substantial gameplay variety, a long campaign, or a major new take on the visual-novel format.
