Tyranny Reviews: Is Obsidian’s Dark Fantasy RPG Worth Playing?

Obsidian’s Tyranny reverses the usual fantasy-RPG premise. Reviews praise its worldbuilding, while repetitive combat, pivotal choices, and the ending draw criticism.

Tyranny is worth considering if you want a role-playing game built around serving a victorious evil regime rather than overthrowing one. Its standout appeal is the unusual premise and the world shaped by your decisions; the main cautions are repetitive combat and an ending PC Gamer found abrupt. Metacritic’s page, accessed in 2026, lists an 80/100 critic score from 67 reviews, while PC Gamer rated it 75/100.

What reviewers say about Tyranny

Metacritic lists Tyranny at 80/100, based on 67 critic reviews, and an 8.0/10 user score based on 704 ratings; both are snapshots of the page accessed in 2026, and totals can change. Metacritic’s Tyranny page is the source for those aggregate figures.

PC Gamer’s 2016 review scored the game 75/100. It praised the worldbuilding but argued that repetitive combat and an abrupt ending weakened the experience, and criticized how limited choices could feel at pivotal moments. Those are PC Gamer’s judgments, not a guarantee that every player will weigh the trade-offs the same way. Read PC Gamer’s review.

What makes Tyranny different

Released on November 10, 2016, Tyranny was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. Obsidian lists Windows, macOS, and Linux as platforms and identifies the ESRB rating as Mature. Obsidian’s game page also lists Steam and GOG.

The premise turns a familiar fantasy setup inside out: the Overlord Kyros has already won, and you play a Fatebinder serving the victorious regime in the occupied Tiers. Rather than beginning as a hero destined to defeat an evil ruler, you decide how to exercise authority on that ruler’s behalf. Paradox describes branching choices, companions, an original setting, and tactical party combat that runs in real time with pause. Paradox’s game description outlines the premise and core features.

That point of view is central to the game’s appeal. The question is not simply whether you can defeat an enemy, but what kind of authority you will wield and what consequences follow. In Paradox’s November 10, 2016 launch announcement, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart said, “With Tyranny, we made sure these were at the forefront, through the lens that evil has already conquered the world.” The “these” refers to RPG players’ interest in stories and tough choices. What the reviews praise—and what may not work for you

Worldbuilding and role-playing

The clearest strength in the reviewed coverage is the setting: PC Gamer’s review specifically praised the worldbuilding, and the overturned power dynamic gives its conflicts a distinct frame. If you enjoy imagining how a character operates within an unjust system, rather than simply fighting against it, the Fatebinder role offers a compelling premise.

Combat and pivotal decisions

The combat uses a party and real-time-with-pause tactics. PC Gamer’s criticism of repetition is worth considering if you expect fights to remain consistently varied. The review’s concern about limited choices at key moments also matters if your main reason to play is the promise of steering every major event; a branching premise does not mean every pivotal situation offers unlimited freedom.

  • Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Tyranids: Neurolictor
  • A stealthy terror weapon to sabotage foes for your Tyranid army
  • Projects a neural disruption field that leaves enemies open to attack
  • A spindly offshoot of the Lictor, capable of hiding in plain sight
  • These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly – we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints.

The ending

PC Gamer described the ending as abrupt. If a strongly conclusive finale is essential to your enjoyment of a long role-playing game, that is a meaningful caveat; the available review evidence does not establish that every player will feel the same way.

Who should play Tyranny?

  • Consider it if you want a morally compromised role, distinctive fantasy worldbuilding, and decisions about how to serve an already victorious power.
  • Think twice if you strongly dislike repetitive combat, expect broad freedom at every turning point, or place high importance on a neatly conclusive ending.
  • Check the combat fit if you prefer a different pace: this is party-based real-time combat with pause, not a purely turn-based system.

When weighing Tyranny against another narrative RPG, focus on how much decisions alter the story and world, whether you want to inhabit a morally compromised role, whether real-time-with-pause tactics suit you, and how much you value a conclusive ending. Those preferences explain why a game with favorable review figures can still be a poor fit for a particular player.
