Its 8-bit style is the invitation; the real trick is the variety, the freedom to browse from the start, and the sense that these games belong to a shared world. It is a particularly rewarding homage if you enjoy discovering unfamiliar games—not a promise that all 50 will become favorites.
What is UFO 50?
UFO 50 is a collection of 50 original games made by Mossmouth, presented as the catalogue of a fictional 1980s developer called UFO Soft. It is not a historical archive, nor a compilation of actual games from a real console. The fiction supplies a frame for the collection: games can have sequels, recurring characters and connections, as if they had emerged from the same small studio over time. Mossmouth’s official site describes that imagined company and its library.
That distinction matters. The pleasure is not simply recognizing familiar retro conventions; it is meeting games that seem to have been waiting on a shelf you never knew existed. You can browse the whole library immediately, rather than unlock its entries in a required order. Mossmouth says this structure draws on the feeling of exploring a multicart, a retro collection or a friend’s game library.
Why does the homage feel more than nostalgic?
A shared visual language, not a strict period simulation
The games use an 8-bit presentation and a shared 32-color palette, giving the collection a coherent identity. But the developers describe the retro framework as a starting point, not a rulebook: they did not set out to confine every game to the conventions of an old genre or machine. The result can look deliberately old-school while still using modern design instincts. Mossmouth’s description of the project explains that balance.

Partly built from imagined games
The nostalgia here is not only for games people actually played. In a 2024 interview with PC Gamer, Mossmouth founder Derek Yu said, “In general, I’ve been very attracted to the aesthetics of computers and consoles that I never owned.” Developer and composer Eirik Suhrke described the appeal of games glimpsed but not played: “We were probably more influenced by the games we didn’t get to play as kids; the stuff we saw in magazines and fantasized about.”
That helps explain why UFO 50 can feel familiar without being reducible to a parade of references. As developer Tyriq Plummer put it in the same interview, “[I like] the idea of being influenced more by the things that you don’t experience, because they live larger in your brain and have more potential.” The collection evokes the imagined possibilities of old game culture as much as its remembered hits.
How many games are in UFO 50—and are they minigames?
There are 50 games, spanning platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzle games, RPGs and other genres. Their scope varies, but Mossmouth presents them as complete experiences, not a set of throwaway microgames: each has a beginning and an ending, from its title screen through its credits. The official site makes that distinction explicit.
Think of the collection as a library of games with different appetites, not 50 equally sized campaigns. Some are suited to a short arcade-style session; others invite longer play. Nintendo Life’s Switch review describes a spread that includes a JRPG, a deck builder, puzzle games, platformers and shorter arcade-style titles.

What does browsing the collection feel like?
Because every title is available from the beginning, UFO 50 encourages experimentation. You can sample a game, move on if it does not click, and return later without treating the collection as a checklist or a campaign with a prescribed route. That makes the changing genres part of the experience: choosing what to try next is its own small pleasure.
The trade-off is inherent in the breadth. Not every game will suit every player. Nintendo Life’s reviewer found that some titles landed better than others, while also describing the collection as increasingly unified through the act of browsing it. That is a reviewer’s response, not a guarantee; the appeal depends on whether you enjoy sampling a varied catalogue as much as settling into one polished favorite.
Can you play UFO 50 with other people?
Yes. Mossmouth says half of the games support local multiplayer, and Nintendo’s Switch listing specifies one-to-three players on a single system. That makes the collection useful for handing a controller around or finding a game to play together, although multiplayer support is not universal across all 50 titles. Nintendo also lists TV, tabletop and handheld play modes for Switch; additional accessories may be needed depending on the setup. See Nintendo’s Switch listing for those platform details.

Is UFO 50 worth playing?
If you like retro aesthetics but want more than a faithful imitation, UFO 50 makes a strong case. Its fictional studio gives the games a shared identity; its immediate-access library lets you follow your curiosity; and its range means a new kind of game can be just a menu selection away. The homage is strongest when you approach it as a shelf of original experiments rather than expecting one consistent genre or 50 guaranteed favorites.
That is why I call it the best retro-gaming homage I’ve played: it recreates the feeling of discovering a strange, varied library, not just the look of old games. Whether that experience works for you comes down to a simple question: do you enjoy browsing and trying games as much as mastering one?
