It describes the unease or fascination that can arise when a stone resembles something unexpected, carries the weight of deep time, or is tied to stories whose origins and meanings are uncertain. Keeping observable geology separate from folklore and literary interpretation makes the idea more useful—and more accurate.
What does “uncanny stone” mean?
The phrase is used in cultural criticism rather than mineralogy. A 2023 conference abstract applies it to M. R. James’s ghost stories and medieval ideas about stone’s vital qualities. It does not name a mineral type or establish that stones possess agency in the real world.
Instead, the phrase brings together several ways stone can unsettle ordinary expectations: a natural shape may look strangely familiar, a monument may outlast the people who made it, or a story may make an apparently inert object seem active. Those are related effects, but they are not the same kind of claim.
How can a stone seem uncanny?
Resemblance and close looking
Stone patterns, inclusions, fossils, and eroded surfaces can invite comparisons with faces, bodies, or other forms. The resemblance may be compelling to one viewer and absent for another; it is an association, not necessarily an objective feature with one agreed meaning.

In an essay about Roger Caillois and museum displays, Hugh Raffles describes how looking at stones can involve both geological learning and personal or cultural interpretation. Caillois put the uncertainty of seeing this way: “The vision the eye records is always impoverished and uncertain.” He added, “Imagination fills it out with the treasures of memory and knowledge.” Raffles quotes both sentences in his October 2021 Apollo essay.
Deep time and uncertain meaning
A stone can seem to bring a past into the present simply because its material presence persists while the people and circumstances that shaped its significance are gone. In a 2026 discussion of ancient stone landscapes, Julian Holloway and James Thurgill describe this uncertainty as a kind of spectrality: “The deep past is a blurry spectrality that falls short of definitive meaning and one where present-absences make landscapes ghostly, uncanny, and occluded.” That is their interpretation of how such landscapes are experienced, not a settled account of what any particular monument meant.

Stories of agency
Horror can make stone feel active by setting its apparent stability against events that suggest threat, intention, or response. Victoria Mitchell’s 2023 conference abstract reads M. R. James’s “Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad” and “A Warning to the Curious” through destructive landscapes and medieval conceptions of stone’s vital qualities. This is a literary reading: it explains how fiction can animate stone as a motif, not a geological claim that stone acts on its own.
What kinds of stone places are associated with the uncanny?
Holloway and Thurgill discuss stone circles, dolmens, barrows, menhirs, cup-and-ring stones, and quoits in their account of ancient stone landscapes. Their British discussion includes Avebury and Stonehenge. These places can invite questions about who made them and why; where original meanings or purposes remain uncertain, that uncertainty should not be replaced with a confident modern guess.

The effect varies by place and visitor. A physical feature can be observed, while its cultural meaning needs evidence tied to a particular community, period, or tradition. A writer’s or visitor’s sense that a place feels ghostly is an interpretation—not proof of its original use.
How do geology and folklore relate?
Unusual rock features and fossils have prompted stories and meaning-making, but a story about a rock does not by itself prove how the feature formed or where the story came from. The Springer chapter “The ‘Glacier’” notes that the origins of myths are often difficult or impossible to trace. It describes geomythology as an evidence-based way to investigate whether geological events may underlie myths, while recognizing that gradual processes can also inspire stories without one identifiable event.
Rank #4
The chapter quotes geologist Dorothy Vitaliano’s 1968 description of geomythology as an effort “to find the real geologic event underlying a myth or legend to which it has given rise; thus [helping] to convert mythology back into history.” The point is to investigate possible connections, not to treat a geological explanation as automatic proof of a myth’s origin.

A hag stone is a naturally holed pebble described in some folk practices as a protective charm. The Poetry Book Society’s listing for Fran Lock’s collection Hag Stone reports that tradition; it should be understood as a particular folk belief, not a universal practice or a verified property of the pebble.

A useful way to assess an uncanny stone
- Start with what can be observed: note the shape, surface, fossil, inclusion, or other physical feature without assuming what it signifies.
- Separate explanation from resemblance: a geological account of how a feature formed and a viewer’s association with another shape answer different questions.
- Locate the cultural claim: identify the community, place, period, or source associated with a story or practice rather than presenting it as folklore everywhere.
- Label interpretation: say whether an account comes from a scholar, writer, collector, or visitor, and do not turn a reading of fiction or a feeling about a monument into geological evidence.
